or are they the same?
are they just as good as each other but one have a longer life or same lifespan but not the same quality?
NGK/BOSCH/CHAMPION all as good as each other?
ive found ngk iridiums for $16ea, is this a good buy?
thanks

Ive had 3 mates have problems with irridiums, Spider cracked 3 of them on his ED 6, Drone had idle and power problems and Killbilly developed a miss. This is not to say that they are a bad thing because a lot of FM members have had good experiences from them, however I wont touch them, along with Eagle leads which I have pulled several clips off the leads rendering them useless. Sorry just my 2c worth

recomended retail on the NGK Iridiums is around $25.00 a plug, so that is a good price. Personalyl I'd get em, I havn't had any issues. Ipull em out and check them every service. They last longer, supposebly better (doubt you'll notice anything).

what about platinum? or is that the same thing?
so safe to say only advantage of expensive plugs is lifespan?

when platinums have the same lifespan as a standard plug.
i run iridiums in my motorbike aswell and its been great with em!
according to NGK the iridiums will ignite the fuel better or something like that too... but at the end of the day, there just spark plugs, so don't expect much improvement, especially on a stock motor.

This is what NGK say:

Nickel Alloy - 20,000 - 40,000 kms - Standard style of spark Plug.
Nickel Alloy (V-Groove) - 20,000 - 40,000 kms - Improved ignitability due to sparking at periphery of the electrode.
Platinum - 100,000 kms - Long service life and even better ignitability due to a small diameter centre electrode
Iridium - 160,000 kms - Extremely long service life. Same level of ignitability Platinum

I have run NGK irridiums and found them very good, you should not have anny issues if you use the correct heat range and gap (as with any type of spark plug). Performance wise you may see a slight improvement but the main advantage is obviously their service life.

$16ea for irridiums isn't bad, I have been quoted prices from $12 to $24ea. As for brand, personally I like the NGK's but most major brands would be ok.

Just to note my problem had nothing to do with the plugs.. My idling problem was the result of the MAF plug being loose.

had iridium in 5.6 stroker for around 60K and noticed an immediate improvement in idle and crispnesss. I swear by them and if you shop around you can get them down to around $12 a plug

I got mine for $12ea just from the local auto parts store (Sprint Auto parts here in SA). Even then they said there was still a bit of margin in them, so it just pays to shop around.

Coventry Auto (i get a small discount) sold me a set for the AU 5.6 T3 for $88 and it cost about $110 to $115 for the ones to suiot my sons EF11 XR8. The EF was dearer because they had to be ordered where my store kept the AU in stock.
