g'day, i'm after info in relation to replacing the dizzy gear out of an '97 5-litre, i'm doing a top end overhaul & was wanting to change the gear to co inside with the new cam .
"fraud" told me it was a "non serviceable item" and to top it off told me a new dizzy was ......wait for it......over $2000 :?
so can the gear be changed ? if not, what is a good after market dizzy to go for??

thanks steve.k.

take the gear with you as the diameter, number of teeth, gear width and gear angle\pitch and shaft bore size has to be the same.what materials are used to make the gears, cast iron, steel, bronze?

I'd leave it there if it's ok. What cam are you using?

i've got a comp cams "xe270hr" to go in with matching spring's etc,
just waiting on the 1.7 rocker's to suit to arrive from the state's.
i just noticed that they recomend you change the dizzy gear, hence the trip to the ford dealer.

cheers steve.k.

Oh dear. Had nothing but trouble with their -8 cams. Those are made from austempered iron rather than a steel billet. You will definitely need to change your gear because the stock steel one will eat it like it's butter.
I would use the exact gear they recommend and follow the dizzy gear setup instructions in the Ford Racing catalog to the letter.
Having said all that I did and it still ate the cam gear!? and that was on three engines!?!
And use a bottle of their special zinc additive.
Comps response.....None!
I switched to a steel -9 using a stock gear...no trouble whatsoever!

I think the -9 was around $400 which was about $60 more than the -8.
I only stayed with comp because no-one else would actually do a reduced base roller for a windsor!?!
As yours is a 5.0 you don't have stay with them..
and btw the other engine was a 5.0 and they still had no comment when I asked why they supply a -8 for an engine they already know comes with a steel dizzy gear!

Good luck Steve.

i have to drop the 1.6 rocker's back to him (as i orderd 1.7's) to suit the cam , so will see if i can change the cam to the -9 while i'm there

thanks again for you help, it may save some anger & $$$ down the road.

cheers steve.k.

Try a replacement 351W Mallory gear, which gets the correct ID and OD for the 5.0. From memory their literature says the replacement gears are compatible with all but steel camshafts. I looked into this about 5 years ago, so it may pay to check it's still the case.
