Well great, the power steering pump decided to make lots of loud noises today and looks like it's stuffed. I have a few questions for you guys:

Do the reco pumps come with the pulley?

I can only see one mounting bolt partially covered by the pulley on the lower left. Are there any more waiting to make life difficult for me?

Does anyone in Adelaide have a puller I could borrow to get the pulley off if needed?

Thanks, Mike

The reco V8 pumps I've seen don't come with a pulley, because the pulley has to come off to get the pump off.
There are 3 mounting bolts, they are external star (think thats what they are called, the opposite of a torx bit).
If you were in Vic I'd lend you the puller.
I bought my puller kit of US Ebay, can't remember what I paid, was under $100AU landed.

Yep and one of the little bastards is right behind the pulley otherwise it'd be so much easier to get the mount off.

They are also on fuggen tight, they really need the proper socket on them or you risk rounding them off.

E14 i think the socket is, or 12, cant remember. when i last took my p/s pump off (cracked housing) using the right sockets i still rounded 1, so had to grind the head off with a grinder, and use a butane torch on the other 2 to get them to budge. if u take them off replace the bolts with something logical, not those stupid bastard bolts from factory

i dont really understand why they use them everywhere. no one is going to try and steal your powersteering pump, i thought they were for safety, i needed to borrow some sockets just to remove my speakers the other day, pain in the a**.

My powersteering pump is making loud whining noises when low on oil and topped up, with lots of wheel shudder going on, its leaking atm, so it needs replacing.

But my mechanic said it was going to cost me about $485 fitted with a reconditioned unit. I was hoping for some more options..apparently its just a seal that is buggered.

That's a pretty good price! Take him up on that offer, for sure.

My reco pump cost me $340, then I had to buy the puller for $130 and Torx socket set for $50. It took about 4 hours because nothing ever quite comes apart like it's supposed to, right?

Once these things start whining, they're on the way out. Mine was noisy for about 12 months then all of a sudden started shuddering like you say yours is. Swap it out, there is no other option.

Mike

Thanks for the advice Mike :D I wasn't sure the pricing was reasonable, but I guess it is :)
