hey guys,

just wanting to no what the difference is between the 170 kw EL xr8 engine i have to the 220kw engine in the AU series 3 xr8??

this is a 3 part post!

Q1: is it still a 302w with mods?
Q2: what do i need to do to get my 302w to achieve 220kw

Q3: how would i achieve somewhere around the 220-250kw at the wheels?

i need to start putting a budget together! lol

cheers,

To get a 170kw Windsor to make 220ish at the wheels you need to junk the top end. (especially the HO Manifold and heads).

New heads
Intake Manifold
Cam, valvetrain
Some sort of tuning

Piece in some alloy heads $2000-3000 a pair depending on how big and what brand, a Explorer intake can be had for $500 with TB and injectors (24lb opposed to 19's), the Valvetrain is about a grand with lifters and rockers, and tuning would be anywhere from $600 - $2000 depending on Ecu or chip+ dyno time to tune.

Other than that forced induction is the other option and can be done for cheaper. Depends as well if you can do most of the work.

An AU motor would take alot of the headaches away, but still needs work to get 220rwkw.

Now N/A (permanent Lag) - AFR 165's, Comp XE270 cam, 1.6 RR - 269 rwhp 14.1 @ 102mph.

this is a good thread describing what u have to go through to get 200-250rwkw NA out of the Windsor, well worth the read.

personally i would go the forced induction route.
Capa Kit or other, Bolt on and can be removed just as easily later on down the track to transfer to another car or sell.

I'd buy a reasonably low km second hand one and go from there. Should go very well in an EF-EL.

I was pretty happy with my car other night running stock and a best of 14.3 at 156 kph. Weight is the primary problem with an AU/ irs/ 5L.

Toss those factory headers in the bin get mandrel bent extractors’ 3inch cats and zorst

Larger throttle body
Bigger injectors
explorer manifold
Cam
Tune
change the cold air intake to a 3 inch mandrel bent pipe
Mod the maff
Port the GT40 heads or afr's

Or turbo it or supercharge it.

Get a 347 stroker kit

in the end its up to how far you want to go to what you will spend $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I dont think carb'd 302 engines are any cheaper to make power with than the efi ones. you still have to replace the same sort of stuff,ie bigger carb = bigger throttle body, lower manifold, heads, blah blah blah.
Stock 351's were only putting out 130 at the wheels. I think 200rwkw for any Na 302 windsor is not a cheap thing to achieve.

Hear hear!
220kw is quite easy to achieve at the engine.
At the wheels is a different story but doable non-the-less.
The next point to make is that this peak figure is just that, a figure.
Torque and average power are what its all about. The only thing peak figures are good for is advertising and dyno shootouts.
If this car is an auto. I'd go AFR 165 with the comp port or AFR 185, Edelbrock RPM-2, 70mm t-body and a cam similar to an XE266 or XE270HR for use with 1.7's or if you go with a slight stall an XE274. Better still get a custom cam from camshaft innovations in the U.S.
This would get you in the 200-220kw range at the wheels without wiping out all your torque.

Pete.

just buy the series 3 XR8. Much better option. Dont stroke it to the 5.6, it doesnt rev as easy (as the 220 xr8). puts out a truck load more torque though. depends on what you want. Drove a t3 ts50 (5.6 ltr) and a 220 XR8 with herrods exhaust and they were for all intents and purposes identical in how hard they went. The t3 had more torque especially down low, but the XR8 was more rev happy. and lighter. did love the 380 nm from 1000 rpm in the t3 though. its more than my AU makes at peak lol.
