OK, i have just about had it with Summit or more specifically TRW. Can anyone tell me if there is a piston of the same specs as this available in Australia.
They are the TRW-L2446F
Bore (in) 4.000 in.
Bore (mm) 101.600mm
Piston Style Dish, with two valve reliefs
Piston Material Forged aluminum
Compression Distance (in) 1.772 in.
Piston Head Volume (cc) +13.20cc
Wrist Pin Style Press-fit
Pin Diameter (in) 0.912 in.
Piston Ring Thickness 5/64 in. x 5/64 in. x 3/16 in.

Notes Recessed piston design is 0.110 inch deep. DurOshield® coated piston skirt.
Also of note is that they are for a 5.956in Rod.

I know it will cost me more, but who do i look to in Australia for these or same spec pistons as these.

Cheers
Brett

Whats the weight and cost ??
I use C.P pistons .. They custom forge to whatever specs you want..
Some old [reliable] TRW's are very heavy...

Off the shelf ?? Ask Burney at VPW....

The cost when i brought and paid for them was 36.95 US each. Weight is not listed unfortunately. I will give VPW a call in the morning and see whatv i can get happening. I feel that there must be something in Aus that can meet my specs.

You don't say why you have "had enough" of dealing with Summit for TRW pistons. The old TRW forgings are now made by Probe Industries and have recently been significantly revised. There may be some delays in shipping as a result. It might be worthwhile giving Probe a call directly, or even try Coast High Performance who are located next door and closely affiliated to Probe.

I recently requested a quote from the local Sealed Power agent for a client for the cleveland equivalent L2379F piston. They were available to me in 2-4 weeks ie. the shipping time.

I think you will find he Brett has had enough of summit and TRW pushing his delivery date out for the last 5 months fo pistons, now as late as july(?) holding up an entire build that if not for the pistons would have been FINISHED months ago.

Total lack of communication and commitment to deliver on Summits side of things now have Brett looking Aus side for the equiptment he needs.

I would also say look at CP mate. would hate to think what custom pistons would cost but they are only for a 351 so they must already have a mould just waiting to be used.

Mate, the closest I can find is an SRP, p/n 149604.
4" bore, 1.784" comp height, -14cc dish top, .912' pin, suits 1/16-1/16-3/16 rings. 502 grams each.
Havent had a set for a while, but you would have to think they would be about $100 per slug.

Your main problem is that most piston makers don't stock pistons in 4.000", most have 4.020" as there minimum size. 4.000" is available as a custom order, and if that is all you change, they would not be any dearer than the stock line part.

I am also curious as to why you would spend up big on an aftermarket block, heads, etc, and then fit cheap a*** pistons? I would be looking for at least an SRP or CP, maybe even a JE or Racetech to make sure they last a long time, and can handle what you throw at them.

Good luck. :D

Sorry if i have confused anyone. Yes they are cheap pistons, its supposed to be a cheap build. Its just a 351, The 427 parts are still there, and i am using the top end of teh 427 on the 51, but it so i can have the car running by September. The issue is i could afford to finish a 351 cheaply, but not the 427 in the time frame i had, and it now appears i can't do that either.

Sooty, i have the rings, the block didnt need boring hence the order for the stock pistons, like i said, its a cheap build.

Have you tried ACL? Or, ring Precision International, they may have some old trw/speed pro stuff on the shelf.
Good luck.

Well done Sooty,

Precision have a set of cast here now in Sydney. I know they are cast, but they are needed to finish this motor. On my way to collect them now.

Glad to help. Cast pistons are fine in most cases, just keep the n2o away from them. :D

The 5.0 was stock bottom end, it didnt mind the N20 that much. Should be interesting though.

Of course alot of 5.0's had TRW forged pistons as std. It was luck of the draw whether you got them. By rights only EB's up to '92 received them but I bought an EF engine that had them and have seen ED's with them aswell.
What you could do Brett is get a Scat 3.85" crank and get 5.0 std bore TRW's to use with your stock rods, then you'll have low cost forged pistons and 392ci! what a bargain!

Not really saving any money though is it? The scat crank, p/n 935138559552311W (SCAT 9000 CRANK 351W 3.850 5.955 2.311) will cost approx $700.00.
Good way to get a shiet load more torque...... 8-)

Depends if you want to be penny wise or pound foolish or not? I wouldn't use cast pistons so by getting low cost 5.0 forged pistons you aren't saddled with cast crap. Then if you buy the crank you don't need to machine it like you would the stock crank so you save there...plus you get extra cubes to boot. What a bargain!

Yes i know, but that isnt the purpose of this build. The stock rods were rusted to the stock pistons, yet the bore only needed a light hone. I have some I beam rods on order, and even looked at a cast stroker crank, as it was only 275US, but it is not where i want to go with this motor. I know it seems silly, but every "Extra" cent spent on the 351 is a longer wait for the 427. When the car has performed its duties in September and Early Jan next year, the 351 short block will be pulled and sold to finish the 427. I wont loose any money on it, but i wont make any either.
As it stands the 351 owes me less than 3k, and everything i need for the 427 will stay with me, so i am no better or worse off for building the 351. It will also allow me to confirm what i need to do with exhaust and the blower bracketry.

Brett
