there is no such thing as an "E series ute"
the X series was continued for the commercial range all the way through till EL.

XG= EA-ED
XH= EF
XHII= EL

generally i would say the xh(2) is the best model to buy, as it is the newest of the lot, therefore hopefully presenting the least problems (provided it hasnt been flogged).
As well as the obvious age, the xh got a fair few updates over the aging XG, new front end, rack and pinion steering etc...

There are no E series utes.

There is an XG which is basically an XF with an early E series motor. It handles like an XF, looks like an XF, rusts like an XF, needs door handles like an XF.

Then there is an XH. It has an E series front suspension setup and front end but looks like half an XF, rusts like an XF, needs door handles like an XF. Both their interiors resemble an XF apart from the instrument cluster.

Get an AU Ute. They are heaps better imo (if you dont mind the ugliness) and not much more expensive these days. I paid only $5k for mine.

I had an XG before the AU and hated it.

depends really on personal choice

I have an XH2 and as much as i love it, i do have to admit it is very dated (consider they have used basically the same chassis, interior etc since the XD- nearly 30 years!)

an AU will go for more, but will be more comfortable, more refined and it really depends how reliable you want it to be, the x series are pretty tough, but being an old design, will present some problems along the way somewhere IMO.

apparently the XH door handles are different to XD to XG. i drive an XF ute,a 1992 model,one of the last XF'S ever built. from what iv heard you can install EF/EL rear door handles on XH doors?? someone correct me if im wrong...buy an XF they going cheap.

XH they way to go, like all the others said, they're seriously out dated but if you really want an X series ute id go the newest. i personally hate the look of AU's but the doors are a problem, they rust a bit and the handle's are a prick!!!! but at least they're only $30 a pop from ford
- XH dumped with some BA XR6 17"s.... Bootiful!!

I've owned all of 'em and still own an XH II. Personally I'd go an XG and do a broadband conversion on it. Think about it-
The XH front panels are unique and really hard to get. Spare parts interpreters get confused when you say you have a 98 XH:"So it's the same as an EL then" Simple things like plug leads and Serpentine belts are the same as an early E series.
The XF is as tuff as nails and really simple to work on but are hard to get in good nick. Also the base of the engine is getting old and uses older technology (but can be made to go hard with minimal effort)
The XG uses the xf body so there are a gazillion vehicles out there to get donor panels etc from. There are still a few good ones out there up for grabs too. The base engine is not a great deal different to that in an AU and is easy to get parts for because an XG is the same mechanically as its equivelant year in the sedans. Also upgrading is easy as that path has been trod and you can learn from others mistakes.

Hope it all makes sense as I try to apply a dogs twisted logic to life :lol:

I've had an XD and an XF ute, and my XH is SOOOOOOOOOOO much better than them. The E series front end is the best thing ford ever did, it is eleventy times better to drive than the earlier x series.
In saying that, my next ute (if it ever happens - I love my XH) would be a V8 manual AU. However, I do not like the front end of any AU's, not even the XR8, but I have been told by several persons that B-series front panels can be retro fitted to an AU cab. Now that would make a nice ute, a B-series styled ute, but with the good old 5.0 up front, instead of the big a*** mod motor. 8-)
