Hey everyonme, recently i was given an XD ute, licensed but totally f**k! especially with rust. Im lovin the look and i love the feel of the three speed manual so i decided to do it up. This is going to be a monster of a project but i plan on gettin this car into show room condition and by lookin at da pics i will put on da bottom of dis page you will see how big it this job will be as well. I am probably going to have heaps of queries and stuff from all you more experienced members out there along the way, but i thought id just post away and i would realy appreciate any advice. Thanks everyone.

what a job! Its good to see you in the photos getting to work ;).

Just stirring.
Before you go starting this sit down and work out what has to be done and how much your prepared to pay otherwise you could end up broke with a half finished job that no one wants to buy. From the photos it looks pretty far gone and maybe you would be better to save some more and find one without reg but a good body and swap all the "good" bits over to the good body

Hey guys time for me to clear up some of your questions and sorry it has taken a while... At the moment all im interested is getting it straight, removing the rust and having it mechanically sound. I have another xd but in a sedan which has no rust at all in it and that is where i will be cutting the new floor and roof from as well as swapping some of the panles over.
A bit about the ute:
it has 10 good tyres from the two cars :D
i noticed it doesnt have an xd motor but an xf with an after market electronic fuel pump, not the mechanical one
its a three speed manual - very tight
no rust in the underbody at all, bonus!

I have started this thread because i am doing this project to up my skills in welding, boggin, painting, mechanics... basically everythin. What i would like is feedback from you guys on what could be an easier way to do things, ideas of interor and exterior mods and also mods for the xf engine as i havent had much to do with any x series engines.

By the way i now have two mint condition blue swade bucket seats from an xd i found at the tip, so info and tips on putting them in and gettin da old benchy out would be appreciated
Thanks guys and ill keep ya posted wit more of wat ive done, successes, failures and lotsa pics ;)

What I did when I started my project was do a slow walk around finding and talking pics of every little problem on the body. This then becomes your list of problems to work through. Start with the hardest and work you way through, Getting the big jobs out the way will keep you motivated.

Looking at those photos it looks like there are a few previous repairs on the car. If so give them a good going over as you dont want to go spraying over someone elses dodgy repair and having it ruin your pain job just after you finish your project.

The windshield looks like the scary part. Have you stripped everything away to see how far the damage extends?

hey thanks for the tips. Yer the windsheild worried me at first. What I have thought i would do is remove the windscreen and cut the exact same roof part out of the sedan. i can then fold the metal over the back and under that stripping which goes around the back window. let us no wat u think about that please. cheers guys for all da help

Thats how I would approach it. You'll need to pull the windshield out, the seals and stripping off and see how far down the A-piller and along the windshield sill the damage goes. Get a wire wheel and knock all the rust off and see what you have to work with. Post some more pics and see what everyone has to say.

dont let it run out of reg if your going to cut the roof. Its a structual part of the car and its illigal to do home cut an shuts these days
