heat from extractors usually kills them, i took mine out of the ea, smashed the center out and brazed it up solid then bridged out the plug connector. just be weary it could stall on full lock but you should never hold steering at full lock anyway.

does it have an oem p/s oil cooler fitted ?

I had a mechanic in Sydney who told me that all the cabs replaced them with blanking plugs. Then he handed me one... Wonder what I did with it.

Blanking sounds like a bandaid solution - the problem still remains.
Wonder if the pump pressure might be high - see if you can borrow another pump, and run it for a while. You should be able to draw out enough oil so there's not too much mess, with the pump being high up.
Degrease the rack thoroughly, and monitor for leaks.

The V8's dont have the switch ;)

I was actually wondering if the switch was exposed to extreme heat : Exhaust Gasses or something

i never had an issue with mine stalling when i blanked it.
if the cam you are running is unfriendly it might be an issue, i had a dev3hl which idled fairly well.

i agree with snap though that if it's going through that many, blanking it might just mask an issue.

I've been running extractors on my I6's for some time, with the factory press s/w's without problem.

Maybe it's something basic - IIRC they should be fitted with a small O ring - is it there ???

The pumps run variable pressure (variable vanes) depending on rack load, i.e. most load is on turns, and very little on straight ahead. The pumps also run a relief for high press.
