The fuel gauge on my XE is always on full, way past full actually. Is this likely to be a problem at the fuel tank sensor or the actual dash? any ideas?

Never worried me in the past until i flicked from gas to petrol today and found out i had none!

If it is anything like my XD was, then definitely the sendor in the tank. I doubt Ford would still carry them, but you never know.

Thanks Brett, i was hoping that wouldn't be the case, it's easier to change the whole dash than to get to the tank. which was going to be my next question, is there an easy way to get to the top of the fuel tank in utes?

Take the front section of the floor out, the tank is right there.
Turn the key to "ON", and earth out the wire for the sender unit. If the guage goes to full, the sender is rooted. If the guage doesnt work, it's the guage that is at fault.

Thanks sooty, i'll give it a go on the weekend. The gauge is already at full as soon as the ignition is ON, so sounds like its the sender already, see how it goes.

I hope that's the case but if the wire is earthing the gauge shouldn't work at all, so because it's at full then most likely the sender's packed it. I hope I'm wrong though.

So i've unclipped the wiring to the sender and the gauge goes to empty (fair enough) and as soon as i hook it back on, it goes back to past full. I've sorta given in to the fact that the sender is stuffed and have taken it out and see if i can ring around some wreckers to get another one.

Any other tests i can do before i go out and buy another one?

The wiring plug that hooks onto the sender has three wires, when you say 'earth it out', which wire do i earth out of the three?

It is common for fuel senders to fail if moisture get in there u can remove the sender and soak it in metho for 30 minutes that will remove all the moisture inside the sender also check if there is any water in the bottom of the fuel tank when u remove the sender.
