Hi guys, I am looking at converting my doors over to keyless entry. I got 2 quotes today from alarm guys and 1 said $430 and it must have an alarm with the unit and another guy quoted $320 without an alarm.
I just want to have a remote to unlock and lock the doors without having to put the key into the door. Is it a big job to convert them over to keyless using the actuators from an EF/EL or is there more to it? Any suggestions would be gratefully received or point me towards an article from someone who has done this conversion. I cannot seem to find anything about the conversion. Cheers, Steve. |

Do both doors lock/unlock from one side using the key ??

Yeah as above as most xh's (I thought all but easily could be wrong) was standard, and all you'll need it a factory remote, I assume yours just got lost along the way.

AFAIK it's only XHII's that are keyless - only XHI's that are the 'S' and XR.

Guys, My XH is a August 1996 build model and I have always had to use the key to unlock either door. When opening the drivers door the passenger one stays locked. I did have the door trim off some time back and I saw no actuators etc in there. It is a 1 tonne Longreach model with 6 cylinder motor and column shift automatic. It was originally a bench seat but I have recently installed EL Fairmont buckets. That's about all I can say about it, nothing flash just the standard type of ute I assume.

Yeah mine is a 96 and it doesnt have central locking neither.
Another thing on the list to do.

Hi EVL098 I've been watching your posts since you took delivery of the XH and it has come up really good. I have to get some photos so weather permitting tomorrow I will get some and post them up. Wifes car has remote locking as well as my Fairlane so I will have a go at connecting the Ute up to remote if I get a chance. I like the look of the XH with the sloping front and I would have liked to have gotten onto a XR but this one came up for a really good price and I could see the potential. Wen I get a chance I will do a short story on what I have done to it and post it.

DIY! Kits are only like $50 from ebay! Won't have a factory control obvioulsy - but it'll do the job

Thanks Mitch, I did see them but I was a bit unsure in relation to electrics and factory smartlocks etc.

You can run factory actuators, or aftermarket (preferred), and wire them up to the BEM to run a keyfob - remember also to add a wire for training, if you don't have a rear demister.

Thanks for that, I have just been checking out the keyless kits on E-Bay. I am not really into the new age electronics so the after market kits look easy enough for me. I am a bit hesitant when it comes to fiddling around with BEM's and ECU's etc. Thanks again.

I just fitted an after market kit. Works fine but seems to chew through the batteries quickly. Check what type of batteries the remote takes and see how easy they are to get. I have 27A batteries and can only get them from battery world!

Sounds good, I haven't had time to do anything about it at the moment but I will definitely check out the batteries before deciding which one to go for. Tahnsk for your help.
