I just started tuning my XR8 with my newly aquired G-Tech accelerometer, and have increased my power from 179hp up to 221 at the wheels, this is with only a 55mm, TB ported GT40 heads standard headers, a HO inlet manifold (ported) 75mm pro M mafs & 30lb/hr injectors and my chip taken out
how much should I expect by re-fitting my 75mmTB ,1.7 rockers my chip & decent pipes??

I would say about 2-5kw from the TB, around 10kw from some decent extractors and exhaust and 5-7kw from the rockers. I wouldn't really go for a 75mm TB, 65mm is all you will need and the extra size is just going to cost you throttle response.

We end up getting 356hp out of the ol' fella's GT and it has never been tuned as it's only 600km's old (new motor in XBGT)
I gotta give these G-Tech unit a big thumbs up as power improvements can be seen when playing with your'e toy at home icon_razz.gif

Yeah the G-tech is a great tuning tool but I wouldn't exactly take their power readings as being true unless you calibrate it using known dyno readings. More important than the power reading they give is the change in power between mods, that info lets you know straight away if the mods are working or a waste of money.

Its a device that you stick to the windscreen and has an accelerometer in it (basically reads g-forces). From this it can work out acceleration speeds liek 0-100kph and 1/4 mile times and if you input vehicle weight it can also give a power reading. When set up and used correctly they are very accurate.

At the moment Ebay is the place to get them. The older version Gtech Pro is now a discontinued model and can be piced up on ebay for under $100 which is awesome value. The new replacement Gtech Pro SS goes for around $350-$500 depending on where you find them (actually ebay has them for $320 and that is the cheapes I have seen). The new version has 3 axis accelerometer which makes it far easier to set up correctly.

vehicle weight take away 180lb per passenger that is not in the vehicle's max seating cappacity then add the weight of fuel an you will end up within 3hp accuracy
Also a dyno will give you a true hp reading but it cannot simulate the drag of the air over the vehicle, therefore giving you possibly lower power figures that the dyno will give you.
You can find em on ebay for f**k all $ I got mine for $71 including postage

I take it that these things are useless once you get up to power levels where traction becomes a problem ?
Or can they start reading at higher speed (in a higher gear) where traction isnt as much of a concern ?

Obviously if you spin the wheels the reading won't be accurate at that point, it only reads the power that is actually getting to the ground. I dont actually run the power mode on mine, I just use the 1/4 mile and 0-100 functions as I think they are a better indication of overall power.

Running the quarter with these is pretty accurate. Just remember to stall up your car when doing a run so you can shave off a few tenths of a second... icon_cool.gif

yeah I found the max I could get out of dads was 356hp and a 12.5 1/4
but after tuning it a bit the 1/4 figures dropped to 11.89 but HP figures would only read up to 313hp, so great point to use the distance modes for gain measurements!
you should see how easy this thing lights em up ,its like being on wet grass or oil, but the ol' fella don't want to f**k with a genuine GT

I have used a GTech a few times, and each time they just plugged it into the ciggie lighter, attached to the windscreen, and thats it... never knew they were supposed to enter vehicle weights and stuff.

That might explain why my 1/4 mile time was 15.0 @ 102.7MPH

(slowest car there on the day, but highest MPH)

You don't have to enter vehicle weight for 1/4 mile or 0-100 times, only for power calculations. You just have to plug it in, stick it on the windscreen and make sure it is straight and level, and variations in its orientation will effect the readings.

mine pulled 3 go's 15.3-15.02 & 16.1 all top speeds were between 86-96mph
wheel spinning in 1st killed th slowest 1

that was the best of 3 runs.. still no where near what I run at the drags (last time I ran was 13.9)

maybe that was a dodgy GTech

Yeah it could be a pretty average G-tech, one of the guys down here has the G-tech showing something like 12.8 1/4 mile time on a relatively stock V8 hehe. Also another factor I have found is that harsh shifts, in particular in manual's can sometimes throw the G-tech out a bit. So far my G-tech seems to be pretty accurate but the main thing is that it is consistant.
