Hey guys,

How hard is it to do in an XB ute and what does it envolve?

Would it be worth buying a brand new gearbox to put in or finding a second hand one?

cheers

Done this years ago, on a VH commonwhore, had to cut a hole in the floor, wasnt really hard, second ahnd manuals arent to hard to find, usually you can tell if they are rooted, wiggle the input/output shafts, was a bit of rooting around, but worth it in the end.

lol, I'd kill for a car with column shift. It'd have to be auto though, none of that manual crap icon_lol.gif

as said before, all you need is a shifter, cut hole in floor and connect up linkages.

my old EA wagon was a column shift auto - provided for an interesting car! icon_razz.gif

my grandads old holden belmont has a 3-on-the-tree manual - its heaps of fun! icon_biggrin.gif

Is that how i would go about it if i wanted it 3 speed?

If i kept it 3 speed and took it to the floor what parts would be needed?

afaik there werent any 3 speed floor shifts available from the factory, so you'd be looking for one of the speco 3-speed floor shift kits like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=21654&item=4541345078&rd=1

2 problems,
1: AFAIK (at least, in holdens anyway) the shifter comes thru the side of the trans tunnel, not the centre and looks pretty wierd
2: the kits are getting very rare.....

personally, i'd go for the 4 speed conversion

either way, you're gonna have to cut a hole in the trans tunnel, and i'd look at getting a replacement steering column too

Yep, that's what we did on my brother's XY ute, looks a bit messy but it works. His selectors were stuffed so it was easier to just bung the Speco on.
Not hard really, and the only difference in moving to 4 speed is that you will be changing the gearbox, and if you have a hydraulic clutch you will have to convert to cable for the 4 speed.

afaik the speco 3 speed shifters are no longer in production

yea, you *could* cut the old shifter off, but the stub would still be there....
