| figures say that the I6 is about 140kw & the V8 is 165kw,well why does the V8 have the balls to keep going aswell as the get up and go at high speed as the I6 is gutless at high speed's thats why i got rid of me I6 in the first place,in the V8 you get pushed back in the seat when ya tromp it as you dont as much in the I6,you have to brake earlier in the V8 as it weighs more but the V8 has the better note of sound as the I6 sounds s**t with a 2inch exhuast and finally the V8 is endless especialy if its EB-ED |

As far I'm aware, the EF - EL's had the I6 putting out 157fwkw to the V8's 165fwkw, the exception being the EL Fairmont Ghia I6's which were putting out 161 or 162fwkw due to a quieter exhaust. Not terribly much between them in stock form other than the torque on the V8's which was higher.

The I6 is a low down power maker - the long stroke helping it plenty. The 5.0 has a very short stroke and likes to rev - it is only held back by a very long runner intake and restictive heads - but this is deliberate.
The V8 make peak torque and hp over a wider range.

Vic was right about the standard EL six pulling 157fwkw and the V8 pulling 165fwkw, but in addition the XR6 pulled 164kw and the XR8 170kw (till the series 2 with 185kw).
Also learn how to punctuate because that was f**k annoying to read. |

The 5.0 in fuel injected form doesn't rev as high as a carbied version - but makes s**t more torque down low. More torque is needed to move a heavier vehicle.
The earlier XR6's also had 3.45 (except my dad's ED XR6 auto which is plagued with 3.08 gears ) whereas the XR8's until EL2 were fitted with 3.23 gears.

So my 97 EL1 xr8 would only have 3.23 gears???
Man, i thought it had 3.45's in it?!
Oh well, would it make a big difference changing gears to 3.7's?
Would this difference be made JUST off the mark? Or throughout the entire rev range?
Cheers. |

| The six is usually faster than the eight due to the weight difference, but the downside of the six are cylinder head issues. Personally, when it came time to buy an XR, I chose the 8 over the 6 because it's got iron heads. It may sound silly, but I've changed enough E series heads in my life to know how annoying it is. |

Take an I6 and V8 in stock form and race them - i think you will fine the i6 will keep up if not pull infront in the beginning of the race.
Take both cars, modify them a little and the V8 will be much more willing to jump off the line and the i6 will make most of its power higher in the rev range whereas the v8 will usually have a flatter power curve..
Funny enough i drove a std v8 the other night, in an ef fairmont ghia all stock and its was gutless as s**t; i wouldnt own a stock 8 over a 6, only good thing is the sound, altho this one didnt have that either coz it was stock.
If the fbt only had 165kw i wouldnt touch it - sorry to say.
Im happy that i can own a ba i6 ute off the line up untill 100km/hr and just keep up with a vx ss ute untill 100, then it murders me. |

I think you would be suprised Daniel - at how well a 165kw motor goes. Ny NL whips my FBT and the only 3 mods are
1. AU Tickford snorkle
2. K&N Filter
3. Herrod "powerpipe"
Where the NL wins is wheelspin
It spins up 1 wheel and gets to the right revs and just walks away. The FBT doesn't launch nearly as hard.
Mind you - the NL knows my driving style whereas the FBT still has a lot to learn.

I would only have an 8 for two reasons.
The head problems that 6 Cylinders have and The tough Sound of a V8.
Plus if you trying to impress a Chick, it sounds better if you tell her your Car is a V8. |

Im not calling you a LIAR shane hehehe, coz i know yopu know your v8s, but the monty i drove was a real pos, my guess is its fooked then, as it certainly had no chance of spinning any wheels haha. Dunno whatswrong with it, not that i really care, so long as my car runs fine.
What mode do you have your gearbox in on the fbt shane?
I wanna drive a good 165ho v8 now to see what its really like, i feel misinformed.
Maybe i should sell up the fbt n just get the 165kw version if its better with a cheap mod or 3, lol? |

Oh, btw; i ran a couple of 5L fairlanes in my sportsman n4 i go the fbt and it would beat them off the line and upto 60 by about a car length, but after that they pulled up on me n once they grabbed 2nd gear i was hosed for sure - i can admit it lol. |

I leave the NL is economy when racing - no good valve bouncing before changing gears - you are allready dropping power by that stage. I spent a lot of time on th Gtech Pro-Comp and worked out optimal launch RPM and shift points.

Whats your best technique for launch?
I find it hard to launch the fbt as you said it doesnt take off like a rocket s**t, it either bogs down n revs out slow or i get too much wheel spin; its pretty inconsistant i think too, sometimes it goes and others it feels slow no matter what lol.
One thing ive noted is i get best accel off the line at about half throttle for 1 sec then go for it, but other than that i give up, if you put it down right away its like its confused for a sec lol.
Your NL isnt quite stock thou now is it, coughBLOWERcough, no wonder the fbt feels slow to you.
Fastest car ive ever driven, bar a ba xr8 for 5 min, but nothing over 2.5rpm. |

| The NL is still completely stock bar the AU snorkle, herrod intake pipe and K&N filter. It is just a freak car. |
