EA-ED Trip Computer Installation
Thanks to Chicken for allowing us to pull apart her new ED XR6 to create the new content for this doco!
This document describes how to install and wire the Ford trip computer to an EA-ED model Falcon. The trip computer was fitted
to the EBII Fairmont, EA Fairmont Ghia, NA Fairlane, and DA LTD Models. This document also describes how to operate the trip computer and its
various features.
The EA-ED model trip computer requires a number of extra wires to be added in order to function correctly. A wiring connector must also be sourced
when fitting these model trip computers, as a suitable wiring connector will not exist behind the clock/trip computer area. It is therefore vital
that when sourcing a clock or trip computer, you also get the respective wiring connector included.
The install
Okay, lets get into it!!
Remove dash surround - 5 screws. 3 across the top, 2 at the bottom.
Remove radio surround - 2 screws.
Remove clock facia - 4 screws (Fig 4) [Note: When removing the 2 bottom screws, remove the silver coloured ones]
Remove instrument cluster - 4 screws (No diagram - too obvious :D)While we're in the swing of removing stuff, we'll also get the EEC-IV out -
Remove passenger's kick panel, and remove the phillips head screw and pull out the EEC-IV. I found there was more room to work by disconnecting
the loom (10mm bolt) from the EEC-IV and taking off some of the cable organisers under the glove box. Its up to you what you want to do here.
By now your car should look like a total mess. If so, you're on the right track.. lets get on with wiring this baby up!
The wiring isnt too hard - all common sense. See the table below for all the wiring requirements and tips. The plug that comes with the trip
computer has numbers written on the side, plus you should find that the wire colours match the table below.
Okay.. so 30 minutes later you've run some extra wires around behind the dash, joined the required wires up to your trip computer and turned the
car on to see the pretty lights. If all works, Congratulations! put everything back together and put your feet up. Else, double check to make sure
you've picked up the right signals from the right places. [insert simple troubleshooting here] :D

Further Wiring Information - Hints and Suggestions
The following is a further list of hints and suggestions you may want to follow when conducting the EA-ED trip computer installation.
- The ground, constant battery power, and ignition power lines can be obtained from just about anywhere that is free and easy to use.
- If you have a high series cluster (LCD readout model), it is recommended that the LCD dimmer line from the instrument cluster is used for
connecting the trip computer LCD dimming line>
- Likewise, if you have an LCD model cluster, you should also connect the buzzer output to the cluster, for the warning chime(s) feature.
- Base and sports series clusters may or may not have provisions for the buzzer input. Unfortunately there is no information here to safely
work out which model Falcons do have the buzzer in the instrument cluster (Maybe EBII Fairmont onwards???)For these models, it is safe to
leave the buzzer output disconnected
- Likewise, if you do not have the variable dimming feature (highly likely if you are fitting a trip computer), then it is best if you wire the
trip computer LCD dimmer line to the instrument cluster's illumination dimmer line (as outlined above for low/mid series models)
- At the very least, 2 wires MUST be run from the instrument cluster, and 1 from the EEC-IV module, for the trip computer to function correctly.
These are the fuel level, speedo, and fuel injector pulse width outputs.
Operations, Functions & Y2K Compatability
EA-ED Ford panel mounted clock module - Operating instructions
The display is illuminated when the ignition switch is in the 'on' position.
- To set the hours - Depress the 'Set' button and hold. Press the 'Hour' button until correct hours are displayed, then release the 'Hour' and
'Set' buttons.
- To set the minutes - Depress the 'Set' button and hold. Press the 'Minutes' button until the correct minutes are displayed, then release both
the 'Minutes' and 'Set' button.
Year 2000 compatibility issues - panel mounted trip computer date (year) function for EA-ED trip computers
Electronic trip computers fitted to the EA-ED Ford Falcon vehicles are not year 2000 compatible. It is not feasible to electronically modify trip
computers fitted to these vehicles so that the true year and day/month are correctly displayed after December 31, 1999. It is suggested that owners
set their trip computers to the years detailed below.
EA / EB Models
Action: Set the year to 1988 at the beginning of the year 2000. Use the following years as a guideline.
- 2006 - Set the trip computer year to 1994
- 2007 - Set the trip computer year to 1995
ED Models
Action: Do not reset the trip computer because it will automatically rollover to 1972 at the beginning of the year 2000. Note that the date will
have to reset for leap years. If battery is disconnected, reset to 1972.
- 2006 - Set the trip computer year to 1978
- 2007 - Set the trip computer year to 1979
EA-ED Ford panel mounted trip computer - functions
NOTE : The following functions are only available with the ignition on.
Clock mode - Indicates the current time.
NOTE : There are known issues with Year 2000 compatibility with the EA-ED model trip computer, regarding its clock/calendar operation. This mode
will always be entered following ignition 'On'. If the display is other than the Clock mode, press search until time is displayed in large digits.
Month, Day, and am/pm are also displayed.
Instant fuel economy
This figure may be displayed by pressing the search button until the marker appears next to "INST L/100Km". The figure shown will be fuel
consumption in litres per 100 kilometres applicable at the time of selection. The display also shows the current time and date.
Trip fuel economy
Press the search button until the marker appears next to "AVGE L/100Km". The average fuel consumption since the function was
reset, will be displayed in litres per 100 kilometres. The display also shows the current time and date. Average economy can be reset by pressing
the 'Reset' button and holding for 1.5 seconds. This will clear the previous averaging data and accept the current "Instant Fuel Economy" value to
begin a new average.
Average speed of vehicle
This figure may be displayed by pressing the search button until the marker appears next to "AVGE Km/h". The display also shows the current time
and date. Average speed can be reset by pressing the 'Reset' button and holding for 1.5 seconds. This will clear the previous averaging data and
accept the current 'Speed' to begin a new average.
Range (distance to empty)
This figure may be displayed by pressing the search button until the marker appears next to "RANGE Km". This indicates the expected distance in
kilometres the vehicle may travel with the remaining fuel left in the petrol tank. The display also shows the current time and Date. NOTE : The
range may vary considerably, depending on driving habits and conditions (e.g. highway driving versus driving hard/sideways).
Low fuel alarm
If the 'Range' (distance to empty) reaches 80km, 40km, and 20km, then regardless of the current mode, a warning beeper will sound
(3 beeps), and the fuel range available will be displayed flashing. To reset the alarm, press 'Reset', and the trip computer will return to the
previously displayed mode.
