Keep inmind, where does the water go, easily overcome and good food for thought.

Intake could use an aftermarket filter, doesnt have to be K&N though, anything washable (high cfm) will give you the best value.
Cheap pods, not great but better then stock and half the price if bought right, will show an improvement.
Keep it clean, if its not washable, wave an air compressor over it every month! Not too close as you can damange the filter material.

Get some high temp plugs and quality sheilded leads, of course you need to balance 'gain' against 'cost'. Replacing plugs and leads that are still 'good' is not a viable idea.

Every few months check the gaps in the plugs, when taking off your plug leads make sure you 'twist' them slightly as relieve alot of pressure on the cable itself (thank you to the gentleman on here who told me that!)

A tune, if required should be performed after all these mods have been done, as lpg requires a tune after any change to your air intake.
You need to keep good fuel / air mixtures, otherwise you can potentially turn your engine into one big giant blob of hot metal.
Depending on your engine and how serious you are about running straight lpg, an oil lubrication system may be a good path for engine longevity. If your game, like me, try water injection!
Keep ontop of all of these and you'll have a great setup.

You have the ability to remove your fuel tank, whether or not its worth it, as you may need petrol one day if lpg is playing up. You can save yourself a bit of weight here, maybe replace it with a smaller tank (10Litres if you can get it?)
Dont run too low on lpg, if you get down to empty you will hear a BANG and your air box, exhaust and maybe some piping will need replacing ($2-300 damage) cut a hole in one of your intake pipes and fit with a tight fit 'plug' that is attached by a string something, so if it does happen, you save your intake as it blows out with the extra pressure!

MY QUESTION IS:
I am a woman who has no idea about any of this. I have purchased an ef to drive as I work as a carer. I am currently getting around 5km per litre. Or 18 ltrs per 100km's. I purchased the car as it had a replaced engine and gearbox, with 10 mnths rego for $2000.00. It is dedicated gas. Does someone live in the western side of sydney, or perhaps knows of a trustworthy Gas installation place that could check what Gas-Man has said, and rectify my car??? All the information on here is to technical for me.

if your getting 18Klm's per litre nothing is wrong with the car, even if it's 8Klm's per litre of gas it's not bad.

How many klms do you get per tank.
A good major service will certainly improve efficiancy but if it has been done, the 18kper litre isn't bad.

18klm's per litre is better than not bad 18klm's x 60Ltrs = 1080Klm's on a tank of gas. icon_rolleyes.gif icon_rolleyes.gif
8Klm's per litre x 60Ltrs = 480Klm's on a tank of gas, sounds more like it.

I have filled the tank, but have never run it dry. I have noticed 52 ltrs gives me about 260 kms. City driving. I had the air conditioning re gassed and it seems to run the same kms with the air going? I have no idea what size the tank is but it reads less then a quarter when I have done around 260-270 kms?????


ADVICE IS SO NEEDED AS I AM GREEN AT ALL OF THIS

YES, I made an error guys.

It is 5kms per litre or 18ltrs per hundred kms.

Can you please advise how to get done what Gas-man has suggested or where in western Sydney is a trustworth gas iservice place?

That is not that good at all. Everyone else should go back and read it a bit better. My ef, mods in signature doesnt go above 11L per 100 klms. And i am a slight lead foot.

I dont know much about lpg, but using that much gas doesnt seem to be overly right.

Possibly take it to a gas shop and see what they reckon?

I did, take it to a gas guy and he said I should be getting 5kms per ltr. He couldn't look at the tank because the boot wont open. After reading this forum I am certain 5ltrs is not good. I don't have a heavy foot and have been driving like a grandma. Is five km per litre bad, average or good. If it is not good how can I find a reputable gas guy to improve my system without robbing my wallet cause I'm a woman?

Help please.

My suggestion is get the car serviced and tuned properly by a good gas specialist, It will be the best money you spend.
5 Klm's per litre is not good, you should be getting 8 Klm's per litre atleast, if not more.
Also note that differant service stations have differant quality of gas also.
My findings are as follows,
I get 430 to 480Klm's a tank from Shell / Coles.
400 to 450Klm's from BP & Mobil.
350 to 430 from Caltex / Safeway.
My car is in need of a major service and tune, which when done I should get between 10 to 30% better fuel economy.

im getting between 320-350k's to 65 litres around town. Thats short trips and lots of stop start stuff. And being a lead foot ") . On the open road the best I have manged to get is 500.

if you find a decent mechanic get the gas / air ratio turned down car will run rougher at idle but easily get 600k's off a 65L tank.

My mates EL station wagon has been running like this for five years now

How rough is rougher though. As I care for the disabled and elderly I am not to sure they 'd go for the heavy metal, head banging effect.

I rang Joe from cm. Liverpool. He told me it should get more then that. Yet at least four other gas guys say the most I can get is around 5km's per litre.


Seriously guys what r you getting per litre?

I get exactly the same from my XR8.

An I6 should get 350 to 400 per tank.

clearlipstick - pay more attention to the gauge on the tank then the one on the dash. Let it run down, but never into the red.
See how many klms you get just prior to the red section. Should be 350+

Thank you guys. Nice to feel like I can get some trusty advice.

Can a bad shocky system on the car chew gas? Might be clutching at straws here but I just took it to a mechanic and he said I needed new shockies and bushes for front and back. $1200.00

Does that sound right. He is going to use kmg or something not monroe.

No, your shocks will affect ride, braking and turning.

For your LPG system a good place to start would be replace the O2 sensor. Go to Auto Barn as they have them at a good price. Expect around $70 (+/- $10). DO NOT go to Repco you will pay double that. Take the sensor and your car to a local mechanic and ask him to install this and this only (he may do it for free or charge for a half hour, around $40).

If you have a spanner set you can do it yourself. You only unclip one plug and then loosen the sensor itself with the spanner ( I think it is 19mm). Do it when the car is cold aso you don't burn yourself and it should only take you 10mins. It is located on the drivers side of the engine, down low poking out from the exhaust pipe. Just beside the coolant tank but down low.

The O2 sensor tells the computer that runs the engine how much gas the engine needs. If yours is stuffed or slow to respond you will chew through the gas. This would be the first step unless you car was back firing (going bang and stopping). This would mean spark plugs and leads.

My EF wagon with 250,000K's gets around 10.5L per 100K's on the highway and anywhere from 14-18L per 100k's in the city.

Another thing to try that wont cost a cent is switching economy off. I don't know why but on some EF's economy works great and you use less fuel but on my car economy sucks. Flip the switch next to the shifter and see if that makes a difference.

Scott, thank you for such detailed advice and to all you guys for taking the time to respond to me. I already love this place and have only been here a short time.
The mechanic who quoted me for shocks was quite stunned at the temp of the guard and bay near the engine as it was very hot. I know this may have nothing to do with the o2 sensor but it may have. In regards to backfiring no it runs great. It does have a rattle at when I start the engine, but I have a feeling it has something to do with the timing chain.

I will do as you have advised and see how I go.

Premier Auto Centre Sunblest Ave Mt Druitt is a good gas specialist. He tunes mine and doesnt rip me off.
I have had a few problems working mine out but thats not through anyones incompetance its more trying to make something work that by rights has no chance of working.
Had a mixture tune and replacement of the vapour line today. They played with it for a bit over an hour sorting it out and only charged $50.
Runs awesome now
Im only getting around 4kms/litre but that is in a 2400kg Maverick 4x4 with a 5.0 Windsor V8 on 35" tyres. Still running standard gearing too.
These figures are around town. Will know next week what it gets on a run.
