This is my opinion of computers and tuning. It all comes down to this. who is going to tune your car & what computer the tuner prefers to tune. EG pac performance tune microtech's & have many customers cars to prove that there a good and reliable unit to run cars into the 6 second zone like there MX6 and truck loads of 7, 8,9 & 10 second cars. Now saying that Nizpro prefer Motec computers and have made 1200flywheel hp with the XR6T motor.

Plain and simple choose your tuner and ask there opinion on what computers they recommend to their customers and have used in a similair or same car as yours.

My choice would be microtech as both my broz mazda's are from pac performance and never had a drama with microtech and have proven track times & still relaible for daily driving.

so you have to take it to a dealer EVERY time you want it changed even slightly and at what cost?

and is it right that alternatley you can buy the dealer software to program it yourself for $2500

I doubt Greddy would do anything for any ford available in Australia. Could be wrong though but the mainly cater for JDM (Japaneese Domestic Market) Vehicles.

Just wondering on some tips for a good budget ECU for an 01 AU2... I read the review but a) most of that is from 05, and b) I have no Idea what any of that stuff means... It reads like chinese algrebra for the unlearned.

I did like the sound of editing the factory software. Does anyone know of an edit for the AU2? If so, where would you go to get it? How much would it roughly cost? Doesnt need to be $ specific, ballpark figures are just fine.

Thanks

Just thought I'd add to the MS info.. Massive supporter of MS and have been using one in my daily for 2 years now. Never had any trouble with it.

9)MS-II. Cost approx $250-$300, extra looms/cables - DIY
Cons: DIY construction takes time and is not suited to a lot of people, no sequential (2 stage banked), Most tuners will not know how to program. No warranty or official help (reliability??). No (real) traction control. No closed loop (narrowband). No special features (except fuel only revlimit) Very limited expansion outputs/ inputs availaible (ie not enough for PWM idle control and PWM boost control and fuel pump and thermofans). May not be compatable with all ignition systems.

There is closed loop for both narrowband and wideband oxygen sensors. AFAIK you can run outputs for PWM idle control and PWM boost control and fuel pump and thermofans. Personally I run MS1 with PWM idle control and fuel pump and thermofans and hires injection, EDIS, rev limiter, closed loop wideband correction, and other stuff I can't think of right now. MS2 has scope for more outputs than MS1 with the GPIO board which i believe comes out soon (if its not already out).

There are loads of features you don't list that are found in the 'extra' code, refered to as MSnS-Extra. Its a free firmware upgrade, basically the way MS works is the creators release the base model and then the gurus write the fancy code.

There are some ignition systems it won't be compatable with but 99% it will be. For a falcon the std 36-1 wheel can be used and then 3 internal ignition drivers (known as a VB921) are use to fire the wasted spark system. EDIS as used originally can be used, but you will need a module off a euro 6 cyl.

Spork wrote:
Yeah I think the MSII is a good buy (not MSI since you can buy a fuel only computer for about $400 these days). Especially on a budget. I didn't include it in the original post becasue I was comparing prebuilt packages. The downsides are also that it has very limited aux inputs/outputs. Ie no boost control or PWM control built in and limited spare ports to implement it. However since the source code is available I suppose you can write your own functions to suit your application.

MS1 isn't fuel only.. The standard code is fuel only but virtually no one uses that, you upgrade to MSnS-Extra and then it can control a variaty of ignition types. There also is PWM control etc etc as I explained in the previous paragraph. I haven't found a reason to upgrade to MS2 yet as MS1 does everything I need.

Also MS2 is going sequential very soon.. It will mean adding more injector drivers to suit but is a big step foward for MS.

MS isn't for eveyone but if you enjoy that sort of thing (as I do) its a blast and the amount you learn is unbelievable.

Cheers
Andrew
