|
|
Heyazall...
i am going to be buying a new second hand car soon. planning on a AU fairlane, perhaps v8, haven't decided that yet.
My question is, should i be looking for a series II or III over the original models?
were there any serious problems with the early AU's that i should look out for / spend extra dosh to get a series II?
thanks. |

No real probs, altho i wouldnt go series I due to small niggly probs they ironed out in the later series plus they had tiny brakes in comparison!
Id go a series III or II in that order and if affordable, go te v8 as it will help move that 2tonne luxo barge around, plus with a mild zorst it can sound tough and still be quiet/luxurious like the fairlanes were made to be.
PS, go the black leather interior; thats my pick, with sparkling burgandy or that metalic grey/silver duco - drool! |

| Definatly go series 2 or 3 as i've got the series 1 and the only real improvement they made was the climate screen from orange to grey but it means you can read it during the day. Brakes to but mine are fine even with the big trailer l use for work. Power wise there is like 5 kw between the 6 and 8 in the earlier models which is why l chose the 6 so you'd only go the 8 for noise. I drove both and couldnt notice any dif. Also they only weigh 1670 kg's which is no where near 2 tonne. |

Um, sorry if you got upset about my 2 tonne remark, as when i mean 2 tonne im speaking in a very informal sense, ie: 2 tonne after you chuck your fuel/engine n other componant liquids in/luggage or tools/yourself/passengers/audio install..
It all adds up mate; and i can tell you now it will weight more than the ford quoted weight, mines quoted at like 1640, weighs more i bet also, and when loaded up like i speak of its gonna be close to 2 tonnes.
Also regarding the v8s; didnt the au series have a more kw/torque difference compared to the i6?
If you plan to keep the car standard go the i6 then as said above, if your gonna modify or like a nice zorst note, v8. |

| The vct in au 1 had 168 kw and the v8 had 175 kw. With my exhaust and extracters i'm geussing l should be above 175 hopefuly. Not sure on the au 2-3 series outputs though. As for weight mine should be less than 1670 quoted as it's forever low on oil!! Reminds me must change and top up the oil this weekend. |

Wouldn't the v8 have a much different torque curve?
I don't know about you, but i was thinking v8 because the i6 motors "no torque under 3 grand" annoys the s**t outta me. I would like to have torque where everyone other than racing car drivers need it namely down low when taking off... |

| I drove both and they felt the same down low to me. Both felt a lot more torquey than the ba l traded in which was useless under 3500. The torque of the vct is plenty for the towing l do which is daily and about 1.25 tonne trailer. Sounds like your set on the 8 so go a series three as i'd geuss they would be 220 kw versions. |

The AUII/AUIII lane and LTD had 185kw v8 or 168kw VCT I6
Rear suspension is more suited to towing compared to the SWB |

Well, since i started this thread i have re-thought things and am now beginning to do repairs to the eb to turn it into a quicker and a reliable beast. I figure this will be more cost efficent then forking out stackloads of dough on a newie then insurance etc etc at infenitum
Plus i'm really happy with what the EB has, and will be stoaked when it's all done!!
Will be plenty of advise asked for from you guys with respects to mods |

Annoying how they ramped the Au III up to 250KW, then turn around and give us a G220 which is heavier, has a much better chasis, looks superior, and only gives it an engine producing 220KW... |

The 250kw was a TL50 Tickford, not a stocker BA 220kw, AuIII Fairlane stocker was 175kw.

Yeah I know. At least you could buy a Fairlane with 250KW before BA came along. I'm surprised that FPR haven't done something to help lift interest in the BA Fairlane, like Tickford had to so with the AU variant.
Ford have just realeased the new range of Fairlanes with a 2 tone paint option. New rims. And get this. The range including LTD come standard with sports suspension only. The West Australian has tested it and complained of road noise, and having to talk louder when driving in one. Very strange for a 'prestige' LWB that is supposed to be luxurious and quiet. I mean, I at least would have made the LTD the plusher and quieter of the range, with no expenses spared on it. |
