|
|
My cousins wants to play games on there computer. No new top of the range games just most games around. Its an AMB barton 2500+ with im assuming an AGP slot. I think he has something crappy like a FX5200 in it atm. What can I get for it for around $150? MSY have the 1650 Pro card for $125, thats the most expensive they have... Is it any good?

upgrade to PCI-E
AMD LE-1200 - 38
MB - Cheapest - 57
1 Gig Ram - ~26
= 121
add a 8600gt for $71 total of $192
be a much better system for playing games than a Barton 2500 and a x1650/7600gs
If you really want to stay with AGP look for a second hand X1950pro
should be around ~120. |

| Nah not interested in upgrading the whole PC. Put it this way. At the moment the comp plays most games he likes with the 5200 in it. He just has $150 and wants to upgrade. |

If he's determined to stick with the AGP based system, then look for any of the older higher end video cards that had the 256bit bus, eg 6800, 7800, 9800, 1950 etc. They will be the best bang for the dollar as the wider bus helps a lot (two of my older systems are running on AGP with 256bit cards and they can still play games like SupCom, albeit with 2gb+ ram and high end cpu's).
A good source for AGP at the moment is a mob on ebay called PC Meal, they have a decent range of AGP cards on offer. Also check out Scorpion Technology.
Just my opinions. Cheers |

it is about half as good as a 7600GS
put it in and see, not going to cost you anything to test.
but it should be just enough to play most games at LOWEST res and detail
barton 2500's are known to be very good clockers - depending on the board i would overclock the CPU - Most 2500's can run at 3200 speeds easily. just watch the temps or get a good aftermarket cooler (second hand ~$30) |

| I thought the 6600GT would be fairly decent? So your saying its only half as good as a 7600GS? Maybe I should buy him a better card then. |

put it in the comp see if it does the job. let him decide if it is good enough.
6600GT was a very decent card,
www.gpureview.com here is a site that lists every GFX card.
aslso i meant to say 6600gt is half a 7600gt - the gs is in between. |

6800LE is pretty much the same as a 6600gt performance wise
the 6800LE AGP has unlockable Shaders.
stock is 8/8/4
it can be unlocked to 16/16/8 (same as 6800GT)
it is done using software very easy to do |

| Ok got the 6600GT working OK and managed to overclock his 2500+ to 3200+ speeds pretty easily. Im still looking for something around $150... Even if someone has something cheaper for sale I will have a look. |
