What sort of budget are we looking at to start with, what do you already have that you intend to carry over to the new machine? then I can give you some ideas.

Low budget and Performance DO NOT go together

i have an Intel E8400
3g ddr2 800 ram (soon to be 4g 1066)
750w thermaltake psu (modular)
and a first series 8800gts 320 card

it all goes good. if you need a screen a 22 wide is the way to go. I would buy a 9600gt graphics card (preferably a Galaxy 9600gt OC edition)

As said, really depends on your budget, here's a suggestion tho

Intel Core 2 Duo 8200
Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3
Seagate Barracuda 500G SATA2
Pioneer DVR-115D DVD-R/W
Corsair TWIN2X2048-8500C5D RAM (2Gb)
Thermaltake Soprano Black Midi Tower with 430W PSU
XFX 8800GT Alpha Dog Overclocked edition 512Mb PCIE graphics card
Gigabyte or Logitech Keyboard and mouse combo pack
Windows XP Home
Asus 19" VW193D Black LCD (Widescreen)
Logitech X540 5.1 speakers

You'd get change from $1500, but a better PSU would be very strongly advised, putting it closer to the $1600 mark, and that's without going too nuts on the latest and greatest.

^ Something like that would be a decent little gamer, but you'll want 4gb RAM as a minimum - it's extremely cheap now so it would be foolish not to. If you want to run Vista on it at some point, spend the little extra and get a basic Intel Quadcore CPU.

Yeah, without any mention of what budget I erred a little on the side of cheapness, more ram and a faster cpu and maybe even another 8800GT (PSU would certainly need to be upgraded for that from the stock ThermalTake 430w unit, maybe a Antec TruePower Trio 650W for just over $140) would be options if their budget would stratch that far, another 2Gb of that Corsair would be about another $86, and a Q6600 quad core CPU would be another $44, and another 8800GT to match another $247.

Adds up damn fast when you want a good gaming rig!

The core 2 series of Intel CPUs is far and away faster then the AMD CPUs at this point in time, and is the best choice unless you are on an extremely tight budget.

Motherboards, really depends what features you'll need, but best to get one that is better then you think you need, rather then later on ripping it out and replacing it.

9600GT is not too bad, but a 8800GT is better, 9800 is even better but expensive!

With how much RAM, that really depends which OS you'll be using, none of the 32-bit versions can use 4G, depending on what else is in the machine with 4Gb installed a 32-bit OS may not be able to see any more then about 3Gb. The 64-bit versions do not have this problem, but some games, applications and drivers may not be compatible with the 64-bit OS...

Yeah, hard disk drives are still a big bottleneck, but they're not too bad, the Seagate Barracuda isn't too bad in that regard with it's 7200RPM spin rate and 32Mb of cache on a SATA2 interface, but they do run fairly warm, which needs to be taken into consideration.

Regarding hard disk speeds, you might find this link interesting: http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/hard-disks/average-read-transfer-performance,658.html

Do we need to include new speakers and monitor in this build? A good set of speakers and a good monitor make a MASSIVE difference..

a set of logitec x530's dam good set of speakers.

get a 8800gts card (512). SLI two and they are easy EASY faster than any other card you can buy (even two 9800gtx's as they bottle neck quite bad) so im told, however the new "2" series is coming out

if at all possible, www.msy.com.au they have great stuff cheap.

if not, go to your local store with what you want and the msy list and ask them to price match

and have a look at the Antec Sonata III case too. it is quiet and has a good psu

good luck with it all mate

Yeah, between MSY and centercom - http://www.centercom.com.au - you should be able to get everything you need without spending a fortune, those two are generally within a few dollars of each other, and I know for a fact that centrecom keep a close eye on MSYs pricing and react accordingly.

Yeah, the Sonata III isn't a bad choice, it;s nicely designed, looks good, and has certainly been designed to be nice and quiet - http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=125_60&filter_id=68&products_id=24490 - although that PSU would still probably need to be replaced if you went for a second graphics card.

see if you can go for the q9 series cpu. they are a LOT cooler and considerably less restriction with the pipelines.

you also need to consider a case, psu and GC. as well as OS if you havent already got one
