|
|
I recently "upgraded" my "sound system" (lol) in the ED.
This consisted of installing a new headunit. It's a Pioneer unit, top of the range from last year.
Let me tell you, it makes my stock speakers sound great! It's made a huge difference! I haven't even been able to turn it up to the point of distortion yet (the volume was hurting my ears!)!
I was planning on buying some nice splits and 6x9s to go with the HU, but now I don't have to! woohoo!
The moral of the story is, you don't have to spend heaps of money to get a good sound system in your car. |

Agreed, no need to spend $$ you dont have.
Even the change from the cruddy ford tape player to a nice Clarion unit made a world of difference to me. |

I dunno about you, but I have stock speakers in the front 6" and they sound s**t, and start distorting. Compared to the JVC's in the back, they suck... but I guess there's a different point of comparison....
Eventually you will start noticing all the imperfections. But agreed about the $$, choose wisely, and don't spend money you don't have to.

The operating words being 'you don't have to'
Glad you've made the move to aftermarket chicken...and yep the factory speakers (if in good nic) aren't too bad for a 'bang for your buck' upgrade - it's all about power matching Listening to stock EL speakers with a stock EL low series deck...it's actually not too bad - team up factory speakers with say a mid/high series EL deck (the ones with the beefier amplifier chips in them) and they sound that bit better again (aka Premium Sound)...have a better source like a cd changer or aftermarket in-dash cd...then it raises the bar and so forth...I know many of us know this - but a lot of discussion goes into turfing factory sound, when in fact some very good results can be achieved if gone about the right way.
In saying this, I had a mate who has an EF2 Ghia - he kept premo sound decks and ran 3 way Utopia splits up front...it sounded better than a lot of aftermarket systems ! And no, these speakers weren't the 165W3's that are currently available...these were the predecessors with the 5" midrange that many say is a much sweeter setup than the 165W3's...just goes to show...it's not all about power handling
If you want to play sensationally loud...buy loud speakers
Cheers,
Steve |

i had my standard speakers running of an aftermarket sony deck it sounded good for a while till they decided to sh*t themselves.
Now ive got the standard front speakers with 350W 4way 6x9 Sonys in the back and you can tell the difference!
it also helps that ive got two 900W sony subs giving some extra doof doof
Standard speakers are ok if they last but once you go bigger it is always better |

yeah,
the stock ford speakers actually sound fairly decent, but being powered by an aftermarket h/u and they tend to blow, cuz they are being way overpowered.
but yeh, if you are happy with the sound, dont upgrade till they dont work anymore |

Yep when i removed all the good stuff out of my XF i replaced everthing with dirt cheap gear.
DNA 4' door mounted speakers (flush mounted, custom job by me) $35 all up including new door trims in mint condition.
VDO Dayton 2004 model 4x40 HU which was in the XR6 at the time. Cost me $50 to put in the XF.
And Venus 400watt 4 way 6'9's which i bought for $49, to fill the large 6'9 holes in the parcel shelf.
Seriously for a system that cost me just over $100 all up it sounded pretty decent. Nice loud bass out of the 6'9's thou, wasnt very clear but.
LOL my amp kit which i got for free was nearly worth more than this setup. |

| Yeh, they're not too bad the stock speakers. Whats the actual power of them? My bros ones seem to be not to bad in the AU. You don't get much distortion when you pump em, the ones in his EA weren't to bad either. |

I put a new mp3 player in my car and hooked it up to the standard speakers, and it sounds twice as good as the old tape player. I keep the fader slightly to the back, as when it is even too much treble comes out of the front two speakers.
I am thinking I might leave the fronts as they are and just put a nice set of speakers in the rear.
I also purchased 2 little self powered subs for under the front seats, and they make a huge amount of difference to the bass in the car, however I have them disconnected at the moment, because they were making a horrible buzzing sound. The signal wire and the input wire are in the same loom and it gets too much interference, so I have to pull the loom apart and seperate the wires.
Might do that tomorrow given half a chance. |

three of my four original speakers suprised me with how good they were, but there seemed to be a distortion coming froim the rear at low volume.
When i put the new speakers in, i found the rear left had a big bloody hole in the main cone and a chunk out of the little cone.
Meh... you get that |

| Really any descent sound system should start with a quality hu (cept mine) and then move on from there, so you made a gud choice now as ur deafness increase u can expand ur system. |

Then I got ripped off! Brad told me top of the line! lol
But meh, who cares?! Even better if it's not the top of the range - just imagine what THAT would sound like! I'm uber happy with the sound. |

Yesterday, Waggin had his first proper listen to the sound since the HU was installed. He was very impressed - and that's saying something!
It sounds fantastic from the front. I had a sit on the back seat yesterday, and from the rear speakers you can hear a bit of distortion from the lower frequencies (rnb with a strong bass line was playing), but the treble sounds almost 100%! |
