yep, the difference is the clutch, and where it gets mounted.. ie the 3.9 ltr fly wheel has mounts for the 6 bolt clutch, just not threaded... the flywheel itself gets bolted on by 6 bolts, as is on the EA-whatever....
but if you get a 4Ltr flywheel, you'll need a 6 bolt clutch... well, would be good, otherwise its a waste

ahhk, so all i would need is to thread the holes already there?
reason why i ask is i need to replace the clutch now, but in 3 months or so i wanna get an ITS stage3 motor. mark from ITS suggested that the 6 bolt setup and standard clutch would be up to the task but he wouldn't advise the three bolt type, so i want to get a six bolt and mate it up to my current pile of crap motor while i get the dosh together so i don't have to get 2 new clutches... |

just in case check by lying the flywheel down, and aligning the clutch plate, and see where the holes are, and which ones to thread.... new clutch holder, assembly, whatever will be needed though, but you might aswell get a 4ltr flywheel... but if not, the 3.9Ltr should accomodate.
keep in mind, while you're at it, to get an XR6 clutch... $290 or something from ford is a good investment when running high power... and with the flywheel get it machined and lightened while its all out, you'll be thanking yourself later.

Few other things, my gregories talks about making sure you put the flywheel back on the same way after removal. does this mean it is balanced for the engine and that i am going to have problems it i just get another one and bolt it on?
Also how do i go about getting it machined and lightened? is there anything particular i should ask for so i don't get myself ripped off or they don't do the job well?
This has become desperate now because i can't get the car in and out of reverse without grinding the gears. so i'll have to do it over the next two weeks.
I have just bidded on an xr6 clutch kit on ebay, and am looking for the new flywheel and pressure plate now. is their anything i am forgetting? thanks in advance. |

the flywheel goes on only one way... you can't get it wrong.
As for the clutch kit, that should have all the things you need... and if you get a 4Ltr flywheel, you're set.
Get a new spigot bearing, they are like $15 or so... saves you doing it later.
if you are really concerned you could do that rear main seal, but that might not be necessary if its not leaking.
Don't forget to flush the manual out when you do the clutch, ie drain the old fluid, take it out, degrease the box, make it nice.. put it in, and then pour in new fluid.
Other than that, you are all set. Good luck
PS - I haven't machined or lightened my flywheel so I wouldn't know. Im sure any tranny place will do it, if you bring them the flywheel.. also don't know about prices.. ring some places, find out. |
