Posted: Thu Feb 10, 2005 4:26 pm Post subject: Is it Possible for a P Plater to get insurance for an XR-8?? |
|
|
Gday, i want to buy an EL XR8 which is under the restricted limit for a p plater, but it is on the banned list anyway. It is illegal for me to drive the car, but im not concerned about that, my only concern is weather i can get insurance or not.
My friedn went through this, as he wanted to buy a v8 Beemer, and he told me that i can definately get insurance, but the insurance company may not actually pay in the event of a crash because i am legaly not allowed to drive this car.
Is anyone here an insured v8 p plater whos had a stack? if so did the insurance company pay up?
I spoke to RACV and JUST CAR INSURANCE, the guys at just car told me they could insure me, and they said they would "most likely" pay up in the event of a crash.
What do you guys think?
Thanks. |

"Most likely" doesn't equal "for sure" and it would be a nasty wake up call if they deny your claim.
If it's on the banned list then why push your luck? There are plenty of other cars to get just to bash around in till your off your P's anyway. |

| im on my green p's and i have a ebxr8 registered and insured (3rd party fire and theft) with just cars and they don't have a problem with it. at least not that i am aware of. NRMA and AMI wouldnt even look at me but it was perfectly ok with just cars even though they are a sub-company of AMI. |

Yes you can get insurance but it will be expensive.
The XR8 is over 1600kg isn't it? In which case you can have 188Kw EL XR8 is 185. |

Gday,
I own a BA Xr8 Ute, and still on my P's (opens in August ), the only way i could insure the car, was to have it in dads name and have me as a Registed Driver until im 21, i dont think QLD has those *rules* u have mentioned, i have been pulled several times for RBT, and they have looked at my licence then looked at me n said..have a nice night. but nothing about a restriction for driving a performance car.... by the way im Insured with RACQ.....food for thought.
cheers |

Shannon’s and just Cars are owned by AAMI.
I have a Modified Beach Buggy Insured with Shannon’s, but after what AAMI did to me when a WB one Toner hit my XE head on, they can get f**k.
They said they couldn't represent me because I didn't tell them that my 14x7 inch wheels were chromed.
I was only 20 at the time but the accident wasn't even my fault. "WANKERS" |

| Yeah, but even though the el xr8 and el ghias are under the power to weight limit, they are all on the "banned" list. Every single Ford or Holden v8 that has been made since 1990 is on that list. I dont think there is really anyway to get around it, but i could probably just get insurance with 'just car' and hope that they cover me when/if i crash. They quoted me for 3.5 g's a year! |

well do you have any relo's that live in NSW or the ACT?
if you do well THINK ABOUT IT
NSW & the ACT dont have these banned list yet for P1 & P2 or even L's and another TIP have a FAIRMONT not a XR8 as FAIRMONTS don't attract high insurance premiums like XR's do |

i dont think the el xr8s are on the banned list. this is the restricted vehicles list.
http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/vrne/vrnav.nsf/9e58661e880ba9e44a256c640023eb2e/e3decd09a922a2d4ca256f740008de76/$FILE/restricted%20vehicles%20November%202003.pdf
from the vicroads website
http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/vrne/vrnav.nsf/childdocs/-56D2423AB8E3B28CCA256EC900144F45-4FC54A403FF5D4C3CA256EC900144F63?open
on the list for ford is the AU series2 xr8 ute and Au series3 xr8 the BA V8's and some of the older ford V8's theres no E series V8's on the list though they do say the list is not exhaustive it does contain many holden V8 modals from the 90's and earlier.
Driving an AU2 XR8 myself i carry a copy of this list with me in the car. And just take it out everytime i get pulled over. of all the police officers ive been pulled over by none have known wether the car is on the banned list or not and question me about it, all i do is show them the list they point out to me that the list is not exhaustive and say that they will look into it and if its on the banned list that i am to expect a ticket in the mail. well i havnt received any fines in the mail so i can assume that:
A) my car isnt on the banned list although it does have the same 220kw engine as the series3 AU's. or,
B) i am very lucky as not to get fined for driving a high high powered vehicle on my P's
the only way to know for sure though is if you call vicroads on 131171
and ask them yourself. |

| If you drive on victorian roads you have to obey victorian road laws ignorance isnt an excuse and the police can still fine you if they wish to. |
