Motor magazine has broken the clutches of 2 F6 Typhoons whilst in the pits after rigorous acceleration tests.
The first one happened on day one in the pits. Later that day FPV rushed a replacement Typhoon to PCOTY. The following morning it too had a clutch failure after Ford V8 Supercar driver Warren Luff, and Motor's Michael Taylor had run a total of eight laps around Winton racetrack.
Both clutch failures happened while in the pits, apparently due to the inability to select gears.
David Flint in a message stated that, "People don't drive like that!" in reference to the people at Motor's PCOTY flat shifting in the F6 Typhoon.
Motor categorically denied flat shifting in any car saying that they test using a variety of techniques to get the best possible times out of cars, but flat shifting isn't one of them. There's a big difference between driving hard and mechanical abuse and it's a line MOTOR is loathe to cross.
This brings to 3, the number of clutch failures the F6 has had since it's release, the other at the hands of Glenn Butler, doing a story for Wheels magazine.
Curiously, the clutch problem isn't the only problem the Typhoon seems to have. When it comes to power and speed, it has become evident that it is actually slower than it's sibling the XR6 Turbo.
According to dyno testing the odd Typhoon is also producing the same if not less power than the XR6 Turbo.
It appears the early XR6 Turbo out performs Ford's original specifications.
The following are results of testing thus far.
0-100km/h XR6 Turbo 5.91 F6 Typhoon 6.40
400m XR6 Turbo 14.14 F6 Typhoon 14.64
400m speed XR6 Turbo 162.6km/h F6 Typhoon 159km/h
1km XR6 Turbo 25.90 F6 Typhoon 26.24
Winton XR6 Turbo 1:46.28 F6 Typhoon 1:46.46
RwKw XR6 Turbo 185KW F6 Typhoon 200KW
According to Motor magazine, FPV have gone into emergency engineering
with the soon to be released Typhoon. |

Heard about this test some time ago now.
About those perfomance figures give it some time the typhoon has been tested practically twice by motor and wheels magazine, usually faster times are extracted by heaps of practise. When the GT came out it was doing 6.3 for the 100 dash and now it is doing it in the 5's.
You also might want to look up the overtaking speed 90-130 in 1st 2nd 3rd. The typhoon demolishes the GT and the club sport R8 not to mention the GTS 
Might have a look around for those times for you. |

yeah they're having dramas with the twin plate clutches in the f6's for some reason.
Ford will probably deny it too. |

| from what i've heard, the failure is in the retainer circlip's that hold the centre clutch plate in position. hard or flat shifting is just sheering them in half. 20c parts instead of $2 parts can make a huge difference. |

the xr6's are the ones having the problem, i think the v8's are fine.
and considering ford isn't making the clutches, they specifically chose one to suit the car, and they're still s**t.
It's either ford is being tight-a***, or just crap parts used in the clutch itself.
And i do believe that the editors of magazines thrash the living s**t out of those cars, no matter what they say. |

| well thrash and drive are 2 different things, i would drive it, certainly give it some, but i wouldn't thrash it as if i stole it, no point to it, except the fact you know it's not yours. |

BUT who looks at those times when buyign a car ???
the impression is made on the 0-100kmhr and the 400m time
not teh 1-2-3 ooveertakign time
yes i would bloody well drive the tits of the car if i was giving it for a week

So? They should be. There's no point buying what really is a family car if it's not going to be overused! if u want a car that needs alot fo care and u onyl use for joy rides, go get a lambo or something. The F6's, GT's etc. NEED to be able to last because they are still family cars and im sure a very large percange of owners aer using these cars as every day drivers and intend to hold onto them for a long time. |

Yeah but most families or purchasers of those cars don't thrash the s**t out of them like magazine editors do, because they pay $60k+ for them and drive them, service them, wash them, basically keep it maintained.
If i paid $60k for a car, i sure as hell wouldn't flat shift in it, and dump the clutch at rev-limiter!! |

| I'm with twr on this one. If i paid some 60 odd thousand for a "performance" car i'd push it to breaking point day in day out. I didn't buy the car to wank around and drive realy slow so other kids see how cool i am, because if i'd wanted to do that i woulda bought a lancer and put an evo kit and stickers on it. I bought it just exactly so i could flat shift it, dump the clutch at the limiter, throw it sideways around corners and so on and so forth. That's the reason you buy a performance car in the first place, so you could do things with it that you cant with a family sedan (mind you that never stopped me before, hehehe) but you get my point. |

That's what I mean. I'd use it. Treat it like it's ment to be treated. The V8's and what not are ment to be opened up, they like it, if they didn't they wouldn't make such a beautiful noise. I wouldn't however go phyco and break/wreck the thing. But I wouldn't drive it like it's just a normal bottom of the line I6 falcon. |

| Well I guess their is a limit too thrashing anything. Cause if you thrash it to that sort of point you probably going to end up in a wall or hitting a Lamp post and killing yourself and others. |

| Fair go to the mags,fellas.You show me how you would get a reasonable 0-100 time by sitting it on the limiter and dumping it.s**t,my old capri would sit there smoking/spinning,let alone if tried in an XR8..............as for flat shifting,well,no enthusiast would have that little mechanical sympathy and remember,as much as these guys seem to have the perfect job,they are enthusiasts first...........................ESP's 2c worth............ |
