Ford is claiming a rare showroom victory over Holden after a storming first quarter by Ford Performance Vehicles. It outsold Holden Special Vehicles in a head-to-head contest with its short-wheelbase V8 sedans, thanks to the Falcon GT, GT-P and troubled F6 Typhoon.

HSV is still overall leader in the hot shop stakes, but FPV chief David Flint is smiling after a victory that mirrors Ford's V8 Supercar successes during the past two seasons.

"We knocked them off in December on a head-to-head comparison," Flint says. "Then we did it again in January and February, and again in March, even if it was by just one car."

FPV says it sold 515 GT, GT-P and F6 Typhoon sedans between December and March, and says HSV's sales of Clubsport, Senator and GTS sedans totalled 468 for the same period, giving FPV the edge by 47 vehicles.

It's a sweet victory for Flint, who could hardly believe the small outfit he set up in 1992 could beat HSV at its own game.

Flint says the FPV range still isn't as broad as the HSV line-up, but the recent addition of the Super Pursuit ute, the return of the turbocharged six-cylinder F6 Typhoon sedan and launch of its new Tornado ute cousin will extend its appeal beyond the current range, which is dominated by the V8 GT and the GT-P sedans.

"The new models we've added will stretch the range and allow us to face off in a more realistic war," he says.

Flint is planning to step down at FPV next year, ending a 15-year reign that began with what was to have been a two-year stint Down Under from the UK.

"I came out here to set up Tickford for my partners. I knew nothing about Australia, apart from where Sydney was and that opals were mined somewhere out in the bush," he says.
