Hehe.. I'm far from an expert mate but I know that they can cost anywhere from $30 for a low powered and simple handheld through to about $150 for a medium quality unit and then upto $450 or thereabouts for a high quality one.
The more you pay the more powerful the RF output as well. A lot of factors. It might be a appropriate to state your needs? |

| Yea i got meself a detachable face one face is unda me ash tray unit in the glove box. Had trouble findin cops though, got heeps of other s**t but couldn't seem to find the cops, any1 know wat frequency they operate on? |

scanner will be useless soon as the vic polcie and emergency servcies are currently trialling and in the process of inplementing the motorola MDN mobile data network so that the police will have data teminals in there cars to receive jobs and do car checks
was emant to happen a few years back but finally getting done now |

I got my Base scanner which is a Uniden Bearcat ubc248clt for $150 instead of $250 as d**k Smiths was having a closing down Liquidation sale last year. Cops are usually found around frequencies 460-475mhz. But I believe up here in Brisbane you cant get many Cop frequencies cause they scrambled them. I only seem to only get like 2 Northern suburb ones only |

You'll find they are either Trunked, or APCO25 Digital.
If they are trunked, any trunk tracking scanner should pick them up. Uniden 780xlt comes to mind at around $500 i think
if they are APCO25, you'll need an APCO25 compatible digital scanner to pick them up, BC796D is what I use. Brilliant ~$1300 |

Depends on the frequency range of the scanner you buy. Mine goes from 25Mhz to 1300Mhz
There are some hardcore dedicated scanners which go from 5mhz -> 5000mhz, but most of the action is around 25-50, 140-160, 400-520 and 800mhz. |

I always thought selcall allowed anyone on the channel to listen/speak but selcall is a method of getting their attention in the 1st place. Ie. Selcall tone transmitted, recipient sees "oh, that's me" and starts beeping to let the user know he/she had been selcalled......?

Yep, youre spot on. Sellcall is ONLY a calling feature. It doesnt enable any privacy. |

| we have 2 handheld uniden ones. just the 40 channel and only go about 2km but they are fun just to receive. some weird people on there some times. picked em up for about $100 each. |

| check out www.gme.net.au under land mobile. as an avid 4WDriver, GME is the only brand i use because build quality is better, more features, better range and clarity. if you dont like GME then Icom is also good. |

Geewiz. Time to toss the Uniden out of the window and upgrade then. But how do I find out whether or not it is trunked or Digital scanner I need to get. All I seem to get on the Cop frequency is that Squelch sound. |

Buy a 796D. It does Trunked, Digital and Digital Trunked - Can't go wrong there! |

Not random. It is organised.
This is a shotty example of how the Motorolla Trunking works:
For each 'base station' There is a control (data) channel, and a number of voice channels. On your Trunked radio, you enter all of the frequencies, and also enter the TALK GROUP you want to be part of.
The data channel is constantly telling radio's which frequency their talk group is operating on.
The chatter on the data channel is somewhat like; 44208 - Go to 417.0175, 38084 - You're no longer on 415.025
Frequencies only get assigned to talkgroups which are in use. The end result is that you can have more discrete groups operating on less channel space - which means less licencing and less radio gear.
In the case of NSW GRN, they may have up to 30-40 services all operating between about 10 frequencies. If they weren't trunked, they'd need to operate 30-40 repeaters, and pay licencing on 30-40 frequencies. Big $. Especially when you remember that there are around 50 base sites in NSW. 50x40= alot of money in licencing an radio gear! |

I have got an Uniden UH-013 fitted in my car & I use it to listen to the cops on the Sunshine Coast, I also use the radio as my UHF radio.
