Hey Smoke_Rubber.
My Manual EL, has 3.45's. It sits on about 2,100 at 110km/h. Its dead on 2 grand at 100km/h.
I don't know whether it would matter cause its an 8???
Can only get around 100km/h out of it in 2nd.

| Without pulling the diff apart how can you tell what you have got.? I do know that both wheels turn at the same time on my xf s pak. I have even been able to make the wheels spin (noise) in 3rd gear, however its annoying and cornering is terrible. I dont know why someone would put this type of diff centre in it.My other question is can the centre be changed without removing the axle. |

This is very useful LG!
I've got a STD EF, with what I can only guess is a 3.23:1 Single spinner.
With all the mods I've done (everything but the cam, see below list), would my car benefit from going to a 3.45:1 or 3.7:1 LSD?
I can feel that my engine has opened up more with my intake & exhaust mods, but the car itself is still a little sluggish (except when I put my foot down with Auto shift kit switched on!)
A higher geared diff would HAVE to make the car more responsive, right? |

| no higher gearing makes it less responsive, a higher value for the diff means shorter gearing. shorter gearing is more responsive, faster accelerating but uses more fuel because there is more revs for a given speed |

That test is actually NOT a useful indication of whether the diff is limited slip or not - on a good surface where traction on both wheels is fairly even a standard diff will leave two nice big black marks as well!!!
There is a big MISCONCEPTION that standard or "open wheel" diffs only drive one wheel - in fact even an open wheel diff drives BOTH wheels, but the result when the traction on one side is less than the other is that side will spin more and the side with good traction will lose driving force.
A more useful test would be to start off with one wheel on the bitumen and the other on the dirt and see how the car takes off with firm but not mad acceleration - if it's very difficult to control wheelspin on the wheel which is off the bitumen then it's probably a std diff (or sick / badly adjusted LSD) - but if it's possible to get rolling without too much difficulty controlling that wheelspin then there's a good chance she's LSD. |

Here's an easy way to test if you have and lsd or not without doin burnouts or other s*$t that can hurt you'r diff:
Jack the back end up after schocking the front wheels.
Make sure the car is in neutral and the handbrake released.
Spin one of the rear wheels with your hand.
If the other rear wheel turns in the same direction as the one you are turning you have lsd.
If the other rear wheel turns in the opposite direction, then you have a conventional. |

| kinkezza's absolutely right there - I have to make it clear tho that I wasn't talking about being brutal (perhaps using the term "moderate" is even over the top for what I was trying to suggest) - ie. if the wheel starts spinning there's no point continuing to lay into it - and you'll find that with a std diff the off road wheel will slip quite easily with just mild acceleration. The difference between that wheel off the road wanting to slip really easily whilst the car makes little forward progress vs the car moving off with decent traction will be quite noticeable. |
