These would have to be the worst door handles of all time. I lost count of how many times I had to replace the door handles when I owned my XF.
Anyone else had problems with them too? |

Have to agree with you and the mad part about it Ford kept these crap door handles for over 10 years on the X series. Mind you the XB/XC door handles were pretty crap to.

| The stupidest thing Ford did was use the exact same handles on the XG utes and panelvans and still continue them on the XH's. They used the handles even though the poor quality of the door handles became evident in the mid 80's. |

Keep your lock assembles lubricated, doors adjusted because of hinge drop and you shouldn't have those problems, I had a XF with original door handles for years, so far I have only had one s**t itself on an XE I owned but that was because of dumb ex and worn door hinges.
I have replaced heaps over the years and 98% of them were caused by door adjustment or lock problems and d***head pulling up the door handles to hard, yes the handles are s**t but good maintenance should fix the problem.
As for door handles breaking on XG/XH, that is TOTAL maintenance failure or d***head, they use E series door latches that are far easier to open, but if the door hinges are worn out what would you expect if you are lifting the doors up by the handles. |

| A quick trick to make them last longer if u have a bung door hinge is to open the dorr with ur thumb in the top of the window and push up, bacially lifting the door up and takes the burden off the lock mechanisim. I used to go through about 3 a year now I havent broken this one this year yet .. *touch woody*.. but oh boy its close! |

Yeh I had many doorhandles on all four doors of my XF breaking at least once a year. It didn't matter if the door hinges were not under pressure from a bad fit ( mine were butter smooth ), they would always crack. I also did learn to open any of the doors with the top of my thumb pushing down on the top of the handle while evenly pulling the handle upwards with my fingers. They still cracked in the long run. |

I used WD 40 spray on the door handle mechanicals and made sure the doors on my XF were level and smoothly operating yet I went through door handles like nobodies business.
I bought proper Ford handles and I also tried the cheap aftermarket door handles too and to tell you the truth, I found that the aftermarket ones lasted just as long as the proper Ford items. |

i went through a couple in my old xf, repaired them at first then replaced them with new ones, they cost me $9 so why not.
that is the most poorly designed thing in the xd-xf's, along with the cowel panel. |

| another thing to look out for is the lock assy on the door (the block with the 3 big countersunk screws) if the screws arent done up tightly, it makes the lock very hard to open |

I've recently had to pay $60 for a new lock mechanism as the whole doors in the XD-F were not so great.
Funny story though - day after I bought the thing I locked my keys in with the engine 'idling' at 2000 for 40 mins while I got p****d off with a crowbar and packing tape. Now the door opens great, just gotta be careful with the other ones. |

It is a well known fact that the X series door handles were prone to breakage (especially if you have some rough bastard getting in and out of your car).
I had an XD once that broke them frequently and an XF that only broke the ones BESIDES the driver's door. All were kept lubed. I found that it was smarter to lift the handle at the rear of it, seemed not to break then.
I always found the problem was with the pop rivet weearing/breaking on the back. What I wonder is why hasnt someone come up with a more intelligent aftermarket version? |

I always had problems with the handles on my XF i think i replaced each one at least once if not more if i can remember.
I just ended up get non Ford ones from Repco and they worked fine after that.
The reason mine stuffed up so much was that the door hinges were f**k (front ones only) and that in turn put more pressure on the locks and handles etc, because you had to lift the door when shuting it.
Ahh dont have that problem now. Altough atleast now i can say im good at fixing them. |

| depends how u treat them, usually if u grip the handle with both hands and not just one hand putting central pressure on it and not evenly spread with the use of 2 hands... |

I found the ones at supercheap fairly good, well they've lasted longer then the repco ones and there better to use, they only move a little bit, unlike the others i've used which feel like your breaking it off before your opening it.
Just my opinion. |

| I've had, 2 xa sedans, an xb sedan, 2 xc sedans, a tc cortina sedan, a 71 capri, an xe wagon and im curently on my 4th xf fairmont ghia, the only time i have ever had to replace a door handle was on the xe wagon cause the passenger door was sagging and the gf at the time was as thick as a brick. so as everyone is saying it just comes down to maintenance. |
