What do I need to set up a wireless connection from my PC to a Laptop?
The laptop already has a wireless adaptor.
My PC is connected to internet with a ADSL modem.
Not real savvy about WiFi but I was thinking a WGR614 Netgear router and WG311 PCI Adaptor for the PC.
Will the Router work with the existing ADSL modem or do I have to get a new Broadband router?
Can I connect the PC straight to the router and leave out the PCI adaptor?
Do I leave the printer and scanner as they are or do I need to get a router with print server? I don't care if the laptop is not able to access the printer or scanner but need to be able to access files from PC to Laptop and visa versa.
Don't want to loose any speed on the internet at the PC so that is why I was wondering if it could be just wired direct to router rather than via wireless transmission.
Max distance from PC to Laptop will only be about 20m through a couple of timber stud walls.
I need to get a bit of a handle on what is needed before I go shopping.
There seems to be a lot of negative posts on D-link routers so I reckon Netgear might be the way to go.

Hey dude,

Your on the right track, a WGR614 netgear router or similar is what you'll need. This will work with your existing modem, and your modem instead of plugging into your PC will plug into the new router. Then your pc will plug into the router (eliminating the need for a wireless PCI adaptor for the PC). Then the laptop will connect wirelessly the same.

Unless you wanna fork out a bit more money for a more expensive router, i recommend leaving the printer and scanner as they are, as they get a bit pricy if you have an inbuilt print server.

With this setup you'll definately be able to put files from PC to laptop.

20M should be ok for the wireless, i've seen it go further.. but its quite environment dependent.

D-Link routers arent too bad either, but my personal preference would have to be netgear. Worth the extra $20 or so dollars in price for sure.

The other issue here is what modem you have currently. For the modem to connect to a router it needs to enter something called bridged mode, so that the router can handle the login to the ISP rather than the modem. Let me know what modem you have and i can tell you if its bridgeable or not.

Better yet, its always a bit fiddly getting a adsl modem to work with a router.. i would DEFINATELY recommend above all else getting a adsl modem/router, so all you have is one single unit that handles everything.. it will be a lot more easier to setup and maintain and you will be glad in the end!![/quote]

What ruthless said.... I would personally fork out the extra money to get an all in one...

What i currently have set up is the following:

BILLION 7402VGP. Wireless, and has 3 Ethernet Ports, as well as supporting ADSL 2+, and VoIP.

i have an INTEL wireless card in the Laptop, connects well, have no problems...

The problem started when i decided to get a D'Link PCI wireles card for my computer.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND NOT GOING D-LINK!

I installed the card, Installed the software. It slowed the computer right down to a halt, I downloaded all the latest firmware drivers etc, didnt do jack all.

Swapped it with a MINITAR PCI card (MN54GPC-R), Instaled it and everything works perfectly.

The only 2 issues are.

1. The wireless on the modem has known to drop out sometime, although very rarely in my case. The apparent quick fix is a new stronger antenna from Jaycar or what not (~$20)

2. When i start my computer with the PCI card, The software thats bundled with the minitar automatically takes over. So i manually exit it, and XP takes over. Quick fix as well, change a few settings (i just cant be bothered)

Hope that helps a bit, Thats just my set up atm.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, out printer has an ethernet port.... so on one of the ports to the modem/router is reserved for the printer.
