i have a 2 year old laptop, bottom of the line compaq, not sure on the specs, it is the womans.

it runs fairly slowly as it is, as in opening up applications and s**t like that.

woud it be worth wild getting broadband on, or u reckon a new PC should come first?

broadband won't make the laptop any faster, it just means internet pages and downloads happen quicker. you don't need a powerful computer to efficiently run boradband.

Upgrade whichever annoys you the most.

Warning you now though, once you have broadband, you will NEVER go back icon_smile.gif

Control Panel -> System

Should come up with CPU type and speed and the amount of RAM you have.

192mb isn't really enough if you're running winXP... you will notice a big difference in loading times by upgrading to 512mb, garuntee it.

Upgrading would void your warrenty, if it's still covered. It should be upgradable, as all computers/laptops are built with products that have to conform with a set of industry standards... kinda like how you can use any brand unleaded petrol in your car.

As pulco said, CPU is fast enough.

Chuck in 512mb RAM, and get that broadband!

You won't be looking back icon_twisted.gif

192mb there right ain much for xp but with XP running maybe some tunes in windows media player minimised with one or 2 browser windows will run fine...just might jerk everynow and again but id bet it will be fine.

And compaqs werent really unmoddable they were just a pain in the a**. to Have 192mb of ram you would have one stick 128mb and one 64mb so 2x 256 or 2x512 would be the go. only downside is finding the ram type and the cost of laptop memory is alot higher.

heh i'd buy a new desktop machine first...

3+ ghz processor
1-2 gig of ram

then get broadband...

but that being said, if your using a windows machine, make sure you have:

firewall, antivirus, anti-spyware, anti-adware software running on your machine before u connect it to the net via broadband icon_razz.gif

I would also look at what programs run on start up, everyone of those is permaninatly taking up ram, see whats there and remove all but the most important and it will be perfect for internet usage.

Easy as s**t to install on a Mac notebook as i did it on work experience, you just gotta take the case off and look for the ram.

Then put the new ram in and your set.

in a way yes ... with a slow internet connection do u really enjoy using it ??? if u have quick broadband you are more likely to use and browse more pages.....and in particular all the adult and cracks etc website that with normal dialup u couldnt be bothered downloading huge files so u didnt bother but users find hey i got broadband now so they look at more of those sorta website and are more likely to get more spyware and viruses on there pcs..quicker....
