i would have thought that COMP2 should have a gateway of COMP1 IP address.

What is the IP Address of COMP 1 and COMP2

i have

comp1 --cat5 crossover-->|WALL|<--cat5 straight--comp 2

Yes both have nics

comp1: 192.168.0.1
comp2: 192.168.0.2

Yes, comp 2 does have an internet gateway to 192.168.0.1 (and yes the dns address is in there)

comp2 can browse google, comp2 can download windows update.. but it cant goto other sites which is fooked..

shouldnt u have cross over to wall then sross over to comp ?

i cant remember my networking skills.. its fuzzy
but i remember "like devices" (eg router to router, PC to PC) required a cross over cable

but its weird that you can browse google n download windows update.

sometimes i wonder about computers... :S

wont work, that just defeats purpose of having cross over then because it it just reversing the cross, what he has is currently right, if you the lights on your NIC are on then the wiring is right which it sounds like it is already

while i think of it have u set your subnet mask to 255.255.255.0

If the computers can tal kto each other, then i'd be willing to say that it isn't cable related...

I'm also going to assume that you've run the network wizrds on each comp to set them up, it has the option to set them up exactly as you have yours set up.

By browse google, do you mean you can search for something and the results will show?

Could it be that one of the comps is filtering out certain ports on the network? (control panel -> network connections -> (right click on your connection) go to properties -> click on TCP/IP go to properties -> advanced -> click on the options tab -> properties -> make sure filtering isn't enabled, and that all of the permit all boxes are ticked.)

alternatively, there is a firewall somewhere along the line playing silly buggers with ya.

Not sure what else could be playing up..
