What can be traced from your PC at work?? they can tell which sites you go to, but can they tell if you go through another server, say log onto google, then surf?? whats the best way to avoid being sprung?? apart from not surfing at all  |

not surfing at all lol
i guess it depends how strict ure work are, proxy servers log everything, but nothing is more boring than sitting there and going through proxy logs |

Yeah depends on your work and actually yes surfing via search engines etc can be logged and monitored we do it here in centrelink. |

best way to avoid being sprung is;
a) not being in the top 100 or top 10 when they do a report
b) limit the number of non work related sites you visit
c) don't at any point surf for smut - that sticks out like dogs balls and if their policy is instant dismissal then that flange pic is going to cost you a lot of money.
d) don't leave a web page open that does auto updates, ie a news page - that will constantly register as new traffic everytime it updates. |

You could get someone to setup a php server somewhere that accepts parameters that "frames" another site for you. And get it to report a title that is work related  .

yeh pretty much what these guys say..
hell, ive been playing with microsoft ISA server 2004(basicly a proxy) and its dandy.. u can capture a short snapshot of activity to analyse without having to go thru logfiles, and u can then see the individual requests people make in a pretty little listing in that window.. ie if you search for dogs on google, the url you're requesting, which is what id see, would be 'google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=dogs&meta=' which tells me you just searched for dogs.
one way to get around it is to try out web based proxies n stuff like www.proxify.com.. these pass along your requests and load the page on your behalf, then send it back to you in some semi encypted form so it doesnt make much sense to log readers.. but then id be wary of the security risk there. plus, the it staff will notice alot of traffic going to that one site(AND they'l see its from your user account), and after a breif visit to see what it is, im sure they'd ban it. not to mention you getting into trouble.(tho who knows they may commend you for being resourceful haha) |

Proxy servers are good at telling the site you're VISITING that you're coming from somewhere else, plus a couple of other highly useful bits and pieces. They're nearly useless as a method of hiding your activity from your employer unless they're totally clueless AND you can run a proxy on your own PC.
Remember you're on your employers computer and network and they can and often do use methods to see exactly what you're looking at. There are even (expensive) methods for them to see your https: traffic unencrypted if they want because the traffic is moving through pipes and filters they control.
Now, at a place like Telstra or Centrelink they have so much traffic that the only time they'll want to do any of this is for random audits or if you're dumb enough to make yourself noticeable, so visiting sites like fordmods probably won't trigger anything if done occasionally. Playboy.com on the other hand will have alarm bells ringing immediately.
Most of us "sign" an acceptable use policy document before we're given access to the 'net. This gives your employer a very clear and in some cases very direct path to getting you out the door quickly so don't do anything dumb. Remember its their equipment/bandwith not yours. |

Yeah depends on your work and actually yes surfing via search engines etc can be logged and monitored we do it here in centrelink. |
And I do it at Defence. |

These are blocked at my work. It comes up with
"Your organization's Internet use policy restricts access to this web page at this time.
Reason:
The Websense category "Proxy Avoidance" is filtered."
So if your work is smart, these will not work |
