my family's computer ( not mine) has a 40gb hdd in it...
and when trying to access data at times it will sound like it switches off then switches back on...windows does not freeze but becomes really slow.
is the hdd completely fooked or can i fix it somehow

i just ran some random program that tests the hdd and it says that its some physical error with it icon_sad.gif

i had this problem when it got really warm... turned out it was the power supply not giving the hard drive enough power. Do you have the ability to try the drive in another computer?

yeh f**k... cant fix it ....new 40gb hdd are relativly cheap nowadays.. purchase new hdd, try and ghost across old data. fingers crossed that it'll work otherwise another os installation coming your way.

i should just be able to transfer it all accross....it only just redid windows and it started this s**t..

I doubt that but yeh....mate grab an 80gb from the pc markets or even a retail store as there less than a $1 a GB.

Can get 300GB drives now for less than $250

Best to do a clean install on a new drive that way there is NO chance of any cross corruption icon_rolleyes.gif icon_eek.gif

it was a clean install on the old hdd it only clicks when its defraging so i should be able to copy s**t of before it dies....i hope
