Ok guys, heres one for the smarties.
I actually work on these things for a living, so generally know what I am doing, but am pretty stuck with this problem, here goes:
I seem to have trouble with multimedia - that is MP3, WMA, MPG files, and it can be using either Media Player, Winamp, or even just browsing a directory of any of these types of files (mainly MP3) in windows explorer - and the system freezes. Not a complete freeze, either the app itself freezes (winamp, windows media player) or if browsing a directory in explorer, just that explorer window will freeze.
So basically it doesn't seem to be down to any one type of multimedia file or multimedia application.....any ideas? The only thing I haven't done yet is change soundcard, which is the only common thing with the problems....what do you think??

Remove thumbnails on the folder conatining the guilty members,
and run VLC as the player,
I guess this is what you get when u get these 350mb 700mb avi's and mpg's

| a corrupt codec will cause this i belive.. i had an avi file, if i was in the directory for more than a few seconds, or clicked the file it would lock up. removed and reinstalled codecs and it worked fine. |

if its freezing on all types of media.... hmm does it come good after waiting for a while?
ive only had this problem once, and it was only with 1 file. i just nuked it from DOS and problem gone 
are you absolutely sure its every media file? isolate each format in different folders just to make sure. what about wav files? |

Hey guys,
Its definitely MP3 & MPG - so am wondering if it is a codec - pretty sure wav are ok. And yes, with the MPG in particular, SOMETIMES when I double click to open, WMP opens up and I sometimes have to wait for 5 min until the file actually starts playing. Other times, it refuses..... |

| yeh id say corrupt codec/s ... explorer will do these sort of crashes without having to be in the thumbnails. |

I thought at first I might have got a few corrupt MP3's, but it is doing it with too many of them.
I know MP3's I used to d/l using Napster were often s**t, but I use morpheus and they are great, and quick too.
How do I find codecs for MP3/MPG to replace them??? |

| For the mp3 ones just search for lame mp3 ... actually there is a big codec pack thats been passed out round here that does all the video and sound files....can nver rember what its called tho...i'll have a search |

Sorry to say, it's highly unlikely to be a codec issue. The most likely explanations are:
Old/corrupt sound card drivers
Messed up windows installation
Since it has trouble in more than one media player program, it won't be codecs since afaik winamp uses a different MP3 codec to WMP. I suggest finding the latest drivers for your sound card, and if that doesn't work, try installing windows - preferrably after reformatting your hard disk cos that will get rid of any crap the old windows installation might leave behind. It's the more lengthy solution, but you're guaranteed it'll work (unless it's actually a faulty sound card), and you'll also find windows runs shiiiite loads faster after a fresh install.
One word of advice tho - DO NOT try windows x64. I'm on it now, and it's a whiny, nagging b**ch that nothing works on. Until vista comes out, stick with good ol' xp professional.
Oh, and i'm sure you already know this, but for all the non-geeks out there, MAKE SURE YOU GET ALL WINDOWS UPDATES! Without them you're about as protected as a kid's a** at Neverland ranch.
