The Fairlane ones should fit straight in (there was even a doc in the mod database here on how to wire them all up) but they weren't driving lights. They were actually cornering lights: If the lights were on and the driver turned the indicator on the corresponding cornering light would also come on. When I learned what they actually did I though it was one of the most ridiculous things ever to be put on a car.

I've contemplated getting hold of a set and wiring them up as driving lights but 1) they're probably not bright enough and 2) there are all kinds of legal issues involved in mounting driving lights that low on the bumper (as Ford themselves found out with the BA Fairmont Ghia).

They just wire up through your parking lights, so they turn off when you use high beam as current is too great.

Here is the Fordmods guide on the subject:

http://www.fordmods.com/phpBB2/documents.php?doc=10

It mainly covers setting them up as cornering lamps but it also hints at setting them up as driving lamps as well. However, I still have my doubts as to the legality of wiring them up as anything but cornering lamps so I'm hesitant to do it to my car (a yellow sticker is something I really, really don't need right now) until I get a clear yay or nay either way.

I'll give it a look over, not sure how relevant it'll be to WA though. Perhaps the W.A. Dept. of Planning and Infrastructure have a localise version available.

I've got the cornering lamps in my Fairmont wired up as "Auxiliary" lights, ie. they are wired to come on with the parkers but also have an over ride switch, so if my car is parked somewhere bloody dark for a while I can use the parkers.
I have had them in for nealy a year I guess and they have never attracted even a sideways glance from a copper. Considering they only run a 21 watt bulb, like your indicators, and point directly down its not surprising.
They are really only for looks but you do notice the light they throw out to the sides, especially on dark country roads.

The cars I wish coppers would pick on are all the VX, VY, VZ SS and V2 (Yes, V2 is right) Monaro drivers that insist on driving everywhere with their driving lights on. The lights in the Holdens bumpers are not fog lights by any definition, they are driving lights, and I'm sick of being blinded by the bloody things.
