i just recently got me car serviced and now when i start it up when its cold i get this slapping sound from under the bonnet, as if the oil is being splashed around the sump, its never done this before, is it coz the oil is too thin???

mine does the same, but only on hills..
does urs do it all the time or only on angles? |

| i had my car for 7months and this is the first time i herd it, u have to be outside the car to hear it but yeah the car was on a hill when i started it up |

Is the oil level higher than what you normally run?
Did they change viscocity?
Are you sure it's liquid splashing around? |

| yeh a mehcanic i talked to said it happens to fords all the time. especially putting in a thicker oil then use to, it sloshes around the piston. Only happens on a hill tho. Its not a bad thing Just try not to leave ur car running up a hill for long time thats all. |

| happens to mine when i start my car, cause my driveway is on a big hill, i asumed it was the front lifters (highest up the hill) knockin around cause of lack of oil, all the oil had drifted to the back of the head, (lowest point on the hill) once im up and driving its fine. |

| im pretty sure its acutlaly the most rearward piston making that noise because of the excess and htikc oil up the back, ie making a slosh noise. |

My XH used to do exactly the same thing after I'd change the oil. My driveway has a steep slope and when you started the car and backed it out the garage, you could hear the sloshing noise as you walked to the front to pull the roller door down. Only when the motor was cold too.
Figured it was the crank counterweights at the rear slapping into the thicker cold oil. |

It would be overfull of oil to do this and you would end up with engine damage if this was to happen at higher engine speed. |

Yeah you got to be careful of some mechanics as they are not strict on how much oil they put in. As I found out one day after getting my Falcon serviced and I happen to just check the oil a day later and was horrified to find the Oil was a few millimetres over the Full Line. I immediately un did the sump plug and drained the excess out. Bastards  |

You haven't seen my driveway  Level could be perfect and when parked on the Driveway From Hell, you would get enough pooling at the back to hear the sloshing.
Adelaide folk would know what I mean when I say Golden Grove driveway, very hilly development. Retaining walls are your friend.... |
