|
|
G'day,
I am considering throwing away my EBII XR8 dash and putting in a fairmont or better dash.
If I source the entire dash including loom, climate control, BCM heater box etc, is it a straight swap out of the old one and in with the new. Will all the Climate control, Trip and cruise control work? Is there any extra wiring I would need to do?
I have all the cruise bits including the speed control unit, pedal switches, buttons and vacumn setup under the bonnet ready to go in.
Thanks for your input.

You'll need to change, or make some additions to your engine compartment loom
You need to add in the ambient sensor (which sits next to your Receiver/Dryer) and you'll also need to tap/install the 2nd coolant temp sensor for the climate control to work.
some other small features such as low washer and low coolant wont work unless you run the appropriate wires and install sensors.
Just make sure if you have smartlock, you get your dash loom from a smartlock vehicle, and if your car is pre-smartlock, to get a pre-smartlock loom.
But yes, overall - its a pretty straight forward swap. Anything which doesnt work would mean worst case scenario - change another loom
There are only 5 main looms in the car to worry about.
body, ecu, engine compartment, dash and engine |

| This is probably a stupid question but don't Fairmonts, S packs and XRs all use the same "sports" dash? |

Not a stupid question...but I am talking about an entire dash board, not just the cluster!

Where does the 2nd sensor go?
Thanks,

If you put a smartlock dash loom in your pre-smartlock falcon, the car wont start or run.
Have a look at the side of your thermostat housing. You'll see where it goes. For further specifics, someone will be nice and post up a pic for you |

After saying my car is pre smartlock, I think I might be wrong.
I now think my dash light for smartlock may be missing or blown as I had a look at the ignition switch and it has a smartlock ignition assembly.
To be sure can you tell me what the smartlock module looks like? I am talking about the one near the handbrake handle?
A picture.......if someone has one would be really helpful.
Thanks for your help.

Do you have factory remote central locking.. with the 'Ford Smartlock' keyfob?
What is the build date of your car. Smartlock is found on all 11/92 and onwards, inclusive.
Some 10/92 didn't receive smartlock, some did. |

How are you so knowledgeable?
I guess I don't have it then as my build dat eis 08/92.
Can you tell me what the big blue box is that sits next (just to the left of)to the handbrake lever?
Cheers |

pre smartlock cars have a multi relay box, which is black
not sure what your blue one could be. The EF/EL SRS Airbag computers are blue.. but its definantly not that.
Some BEM's are also blue. Not sure! My understanding is that pre-smartlock falcons don't have a BEM. |

Just did a check......the interior lights do not work when the blue box is disconnected.
Engine starts and the remote entry still work.
Who frickin' knows what the bloody thing is.
Cheers,

| On EF/ELs the interior lights are controlled by the Body Control Module. This has other functions too (like variable speed intermittant wipers, electric aerial control and interlior light fade as well as delay) depending on the luxury level of your car. Perhaps the blue box is the EA-D equivalent of the BCM? |

Eb non GLI series has a BCM as well : Power antenna control, Washer Control, Interior Lights, and Dash Lighting.
GLi has relays I believe |

Ahh, that could well be it. Good thinking 69
The only pre smartlock EB's that i've pulled apart are sadly GLi's.
If philaddis is able to start his car with the box unplugged however, it would indicate that the car definantly isn't smartlock.. but I think we gathered that already going by the pre 10/92 build date.
So there you have it - its a BEM! (Yes, BEM, not BCM - Holdens have BCM's.. Fords have BEM!)
So back on track - youre looking for an EB Fairmont dash prior to 10/92 |

That kind of narrows my search down doesn't it!
I know the two main bits invovled in smartlock are the module and the appropriate electronic keyed ignition barrell.
If I have these things with the appropriate loom, will my car then be "smartlocked"?
Just a thought.........might make my life easier.
By the way...I have sunroof too, is that a seperate loom that I will not have to worry about? or will I have to try and find a fairmont with a sun roof?
Thanks for all you help here guys, great info. I think my thirst for knowledge is almost satiated.

If you get a complete EBII Fairmont Smartlock dash, including loom and BEM, plus a EBII/ED Smartlock ECU and Smartlock Ignition Barrel, yes - you could convert to smartlock
I'd say the sunroof is totally separate from all of your dash wiring. You'll need to sus this out when you pull it all apart. At most, it would only be grabbing 12v Constant/, Ign and Ground from somewhere. |

Thanks for all your help.
Will keep everyone posted as to how it all goes.
Have sourced a complete ED Ghia dash for $100 with everything......but i'll have to pull it out.
Should be challenging to say the least, but there you go.
Thanks again,
Phil |

Wow.. thats a top deal!!
They take about 15-20 minutes to pull out.
Remove A pillar covers, remove top dash cover (2 allen keys), undo screws across top of dash, remove center console, 2x 10mm bolts below (around) the radio, and 2x 13mm nuts holding the steering column to the pedal box. I think thats about it
from there it should basically fall out. Then the joy of unplugging everything |

hi
apart from the wires for the tacho/water level and temp sensers
will the full dash loom from a gia dash plug into the existing engine loom at the plugs that join the dash loom to the rest of the car ? and just run the extra wires from there for the tacho and what ever ? |
