Hey everyone! Umm i might have jumped into this a little early, but, i saw a bargain that i couldn't resist (no pun intended). An Arepro 1 farad 20volt capacitor with a digital readout for $200. Now the bit i'm worried about (other than it exploding), is the cap overkill and will it fry my Alpine MRP-T220 and MRP-F240 amplifiers? I don't usually jump into anything this serious till i read up a little bit, but when i saw it, i was like the guy that buys a blow-off valve for his atmo Lancer (may have it but will never be able to use it). Fooly sikk moit! |

Well as far as i know, the capacitor will just keep the power steady, and shouldnt blow anything. Dont trust me but |

yeah what he said,
the capacitor just stores power and releases it when its needed. e.g a long bass note etc.
i dont think it will fry anything |

Capacitors are for people with big systems which have ne where between 2-4 subs and are for mainly used with SPL systems.
All they do is put more power into the amp and in turn thay are supposed to save battery power, but if you havent got a decent amp and or sub setup its just a waste of money having them, as it makes no real audible difference.
Its up to you thou, thats just my opinion. |

Caps even out the power when there is a large current draw particularly with amps driving subs where they draw a lot of power to drive them especially when they are pumping, this will cancel "clipping" which is a distortion when there is a lack of power to the sub amp.
It sounds crap too. |

Caps are a very valuable thing in high powered systems and not always SPL, Many SQ systems use them to prevent subs dropping out beats under excessive current draw.
Basically a cap is used to store a higher amperage at the same voltage. You want these wired directly into the + line as close to the amp as possible. They work by storing large current volumns (ie 1farad) similiar to a battery and discharging it into the amp when its drawn upon. They become pointless when an amp is drawing less than 50amps at least. But make sure you are at least using 4Ga pos and neg power cable or else thats the lose/bottleneck in your power system.
Cap is my next purchase, My sub amp hit a current draw of 73 amps on the weekend
Also anyone cruising to canberra for summernats?? |

| i suggest u up the battery before you go as far as a capacitor, its mainly just to reduce power loss at high draw, which doesn't make much sense if you still got a standard battery with little current to begin with, go for deep cell battery, then if your stereo starts to drop out on power then you go to the cap, otherwise you pretty much just buying it for show |

capacitors tried and tested in an SPL setup. the cap was found to be actually detrimental to the system. |
Great, thanks Aphexer! Just as i was about to see if anyone wanted to buy my cap off me. To be honest i really don't think it will make jack of a difference in MY system, maybe Kenwood Maverick's. Should've put the money toward a screen or something. |

or if you bought the cap because u were having problems with your electrical system you should have spent the money on upgrading ur battery or cabling...
either way, i'm not a fan of caps, they're what i consider car audio "rice" |

| I love the discussion that comes out on caps. There is fixed feelings about their usefullness and effectiveness. I use one in my system and found i have very stable voltage supply even when i'm driving the system hard but this may be because of the dual battery set-up. I suggest if you have everything else in your system right, (ie you have the amps, and speakers your after and dont require anything else), and you have the room then adding one is a good idea particularly if you have more than 2 amps. If you are still buying pieces of your system i would say there are things which are a lot more important than a cap. |

i found in my old system i had in my old car my 5 farad cap did pretty much f**k all!! had to but another odyssey in the back so i had to 1000cca ones... then that stoped my subs cutting out..
i had 4 amps though..
2 1000d crossfire to run to 15's
and 2 150.2 to run my speakers front and rear
My suggestion is your better of puttin another batt in the back.. |

I agree A battery is by far the best option, algthough it costs a little more and takes up more space.
PS Crossfire 1000d's - nice amps

yeah the crossfire amps are quality i had them both runnin down at 1om load so it was goin hard.. only thing is i blew one!! got it fixed under waranty.. thats the only thing with the crossfire amps they tend to be to power hungry and s**t themselves.. but i sold all my old stuff now.. and brought all JL im over spl...time for some desent sound quality with 5.1 setup im goin to run cause the screen i brought is 50x5 so i can run a center channel of it..
P.s awsome setup dude!! |

Funny you should say that. I first got into car audio and was keen for SPL and heaps of bass. Saved up and bought 2 Soundstream SPL 160 Dual Vocie coil 15's and an earthquake digital amp to power them with over 2000RMS but ended up getting sick of bass pretty quickly and SQ is much more enjoyable for me and others, and it doesn't mean you can't still have a nice loud bass response if you want. |
