ok so i iz on holidayz and r gettin pretty bored. so i decided to put sum neons in my baby. i went ta repco and bought these 2 little 'type S' led to shoot onto the dash area.
i wanted 2 install them onto a switch which i then had to cut the cigarette lighter off the end of it. b4 i did that i read the package it came in and nothing wos said about whenther or not u could do this, and whether or not it needed a fuse/resistor or something of the kind attached to it.
so i cut the bastard off and connected it all up. then turned it on and WHAM the lil fuker blew up.
so the nxt time i go to purchase one with the intention of cuttin the cigarette lighter part off, do i need to attach a resistor of sum sort?
all it says on the packaging is that it takes 12v. |

Inside the attachment that you cut off couldve been a resistor, or other circuitry to make this "neon" (I think you mean LED) work. It all depends on the manufacturer. Normally, it is not wise to cut off the adapter unless you know that all it is, is an inline fuse.
If you were bored, you could've washed your car instead

| there is a small inverter incased in the cig lighter casing, best way, get hold of two cig sockets from d**k smiths (or Similar) wire these up under the dash and just plug the neons in! then when you wanna change colour easy as plug and play! |

Hmmm i got 2 300mm neons from jaycar and removed the cig lighter plug. Wired them up to a fused source in the car (interior lighting circuit) and have had no probs since.
Can i ask how much? These suckers were about 30 a pop. |

jaycar ones work straight up, with the removal of the acc plug.
all others ive played around with dont, but ive always kept the guys of the plug, and just run wires out of it.
(ie remove the metal contact from the end, and run wires thru the hole thats left) |

The ones me and my friends bought from supercheap for $15 each, we were able to cut off the cig lighter no problem.

| i've never had a problem cutting off the cigarette adapter, although i always use a fuse, and i don't think i've ever seen a cig lighter with circutry in it? most leds have separate inverters if nessicary, so i don't see how you blew it unless you didn't tap into a 12V source |

| or just break open the cigarette casing and remove the resistors etc from inside. this is what i did with my phone charger and a mates neons, works a treat. if theres nothing inside it just cut it off, but if there is, well they wouldnt have put it there for no reason |

Seeing as we are on the topic of neons, i wanna hook up four of them on the same toggle switch, the fuse and power cable is already there, what i wanna know is will there be enough power to do this comiing through and do i just hook up all 4 positive wires to the one plug and all the negative wires to the earth or have like a collector plug which colllates all of them and disperses it evenly???????????
I just love NEONS |

wouldn't see it to be a problem, don't take much power, i'm ran 6 neons and 1 fibre optic cable off the same source, had no problem |

Did you just say you LOVE neons?
........why oh why did you buy a ford? I hear black civics and pusling gold neons get you more chicks than the non pulsing ones. Seriously, spend that money and effort on something decent. If you really want neons, stick some in your computer, and if you want it to have a car theme, get a badge of a car.
Anyway, my 2c.
