Yes the AU sump can be modified by cutting and welding a new front section as shown in this picture

This may be a better option if your into keeping thing legal as I would imagine there might be issues with cutting the k-frame (require engineering?)
wow! seams to me like a revelation that its possible to weld up the front of the sump of the au to make it fit in with the standard k-frame of the EF.. why didnt i think of that!!?? icon_lol.gif BRILLIANT!! can see the au to ea,eb,ed,ef, and el gaining popularity.. icon_wink.gif

Found these AU engines on ebay

The modified sump lets it drop into ef/el's without k-frame mods.

Just need someone to do the same with BA engines now...

Sorry i dont have any better pics. From memory the k-frame was done by cutting slots into the k-frame on either side of the sump. The middle was then pressed in (with a hammer) and then some sheet metal was welded in to fix up the gaps.

I know about that QLD mob. Thats where I got my engine from. However, at the time I got my engine it was too expensive to get it modified already. It still would be cheaper if I modified the sump here.

I think that modifying the K-Frame is still a better option for me in regards to cost.

The only reason I bought the engine is I have a blown head gasket, and was to do a rebuild on my engine as it is just over 710K kms. In terms of cost, if I simply rebuilt the engine ( new rings and bearings, seals etc) plus do the head and new chain, head bolts, guides, there is no way I could compare with a good low Km second engine.

The K-Frame is a minor problem for me.

i thought that you could swap an ef/l sump onto an au motor and not have to do any modifications to it or the k frame? no?

IMHO you should not got banging around the K-frame or you may screw up all the front end alignments. much better to tig-weld the sump and leave the body standard. This of course may lead to distortion of the sumps and further oil leaks.

No you won't need the loom or ecu.
But you might need to convert to smartlock if you want to run the BBM properly, or alternative just keep the log style manifold from your 3.9L.

hi
you can use your manifold from the 3.9..
i have just put a au engine into my ea..
and i used the ea manifold ....
if you want to use the au manifold and have it working properly you can use the el ecu but you will have to overcome smartlock..

or you can use a rpm switch to activate the au manifold runners..
but ive heard that the fuel maps are different and it wont work properly. here is a link and pics to what i did to mine ..

theres more details on page 2 of the thread...
