|

Long story short I need a new cylinder head.
Therefore I would also like one which will pump up the kilowatts. Right now the car is stock as a rock so its got to be compatable with the stock setup but also be good for any future mods, (read: exhaust system and cam).
Calling around ITS Performance will do me a port and polished head for between 1400 - 1600. The Mocks can do a mail order changeover for 1950, whilst calling round the local places gets anywhere between 1200 and 2500.
Jim Mock said there was a 'streetfighter' head done on changeover for (IIRC) $ 950, and has 85% of the port and polish work there racing head has. Seems like the best bang for the buck so far.

true true I have heard good things about ITS.
Are head gaskets rubber/copper/alumin etc... under what scenario's would a metal one be used.
Also, oversized exhaust valves are they part of the head (or connected to it). What do they do? |

| Oversized ex valves( XR6 heads, in ef/l anyway, are 2mm bigger than stock) helps drag that old charge out a bit quicker, and help pull in a new charge, a bit better than smaller valves. |

| Larger valves more effective @ high revs, smaller valves give more low down torque. It's all about flow rates an' stuff. |

Ahh right, so the biggest exhaust valves are not nessacerily the best.
Are they part of the head ie: part of the port and polish job? |

Are they part of the head ie: part of the port and polish job? | basically u dont get the "biggest valve" u geta slighly bigger vlave teh increase teh flow etc it can get realll complicated but is basically what bowsaw said.
usually not part of a port/polish as this is where the head ports are increases in size and cleaned up to allow for more flow, u can get the bigger valves fitted at the same time as it wil require modification to the valve seat to allow for the bigger valve and get a 3 angled valve jop! |

Ahhh ok. Thanks so far Frank, its not true what they say about you.
Would my XR6 have bigger exhaust valves?
And for a bolt-on bolt-off cylinder head swap would I need to tell the supplier that I have an XR? |

Ah, yes it is
And quoting up to 2500 for a new head is a little rich for me. I got my head replaced with a reconditioned one, which is probably what theyre trying to sell you, for around 1300 fitted. It cracked again (seperate head to original, same fault) and so i got that repaired as well, but got it for free. This head has outlasted the second (which lasted almost three months?) and still seems to be going strong |
