G'day nlbxr6!
My fiancee backed her ba xt into a letterbox (i think a brick one) icon_rolleyes.gif it left a big scrape just on the rear bar from just under the tail light to the bottom, but it didnt appear dented. I think it may have scraped into the plastic but i'm not sure how deep, it is definitely chipped into it in places, but i havent had a chance to fully inspect it as yet, i think she's too scared to come home and show me (you might know the amount of damage if you have seen these kinds of injuries before). I'm guessing this is more than just touch up paint, what do you reckon it woould need to fix that, sanding and respraying or would it need some sort of plastic welding too to fix the chipped areas, and what do you reckon it would cost to fix? (It's a regular black colour).

Thanks mate,
-JB

By the sounds of it you will need to paint the bumper depending how deep the scratches you can use a light weight filler or wurth & k&h make fillers for plastic parts then treat it as a normal panel repair. If it is slightly dented try and leave it in the direct sun for a few hours then when really hot get her hair dryer and heat it a bit more it should go back to shape {if only minor ripples etc}as plastic has a memory. If you were putting in a shop expect anywhere between 250 to 500 to fix properly
And tell your girl that its not so bad because your getting hungry

The front screen can stay in just remove the mouldings but it would be best to remove the rear. The door glass is easy to remove so its up to you but I personally would as there is less chance of overspray on the glass and it makes masking a lot easier
As for the plastics sand them as you would the rest of the panels but dont use a really course sand paper.Use K&H bumper filler for any chips or repairs then sand the whole bumper if they have not been painted before you will need to apply a couple of coats of plastic primer before you prime them.Your mate should be able to direct you as to what product you will need and where to get it

this link will help with suppliers in W A
http://www.ppc.au.com/wherewa.htm
if you have a compressor stay away from electric sanders as most specialty tools for the industry are air tools
By the sounds of it this is a big project to be jumping into the deep end on.I will have trouble advising on what & how much without seeing the project. My advise would be to get someone like your mate who is painting it to advise on methods and materials you will need
I have attatched some pictures of sanders

ok thx i can easily source a compressor for this, the car was originally monza red but the previous owner repainted it in european mack truck red. it was a dodgey a** job with runs everywhere.
I plan to repaint it back in monza red therefore avoiding doing my door jams engine bay etc. thats the plan anyway lol.
When painting like all the trim etc wot would be the best way to do that ya think ? because i could probly do that myself i was thinkin maybe matt black or something i dunno lol

nlbxr6, just a quick question before the paint DIY day

have you had any experience with fixing EF/EL rear door window 1/4 surrounds? might have to add that to my list. I also have a few sets of wiper arms here I have sandblasted, primed and need to paint (gloss black). Unfortunately we dont have any black 2pac at work (the aircraft are white and red lol) so the guy who is painting them wants me to source maybe 400ml of black. any recommendations?

I had a run in with a star picket probbably about a month ago (see pic)
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
I brought some touch up paint to try and fix it, but is there much point? Is it just going to look crap after i do it?

Also whats an estimate price to get front and rear bars and a bonnet sprayed? I'm certain they have been resprayed after repairs and the obviously did it on the cheap cause they didnt fill stone chips and the paint on the bar chips so very easily icon_eek.gif

mettalic colours do look like crap if they are not done properly as you have a base coat and then a clear over the top.9 out of 10 times even if the paint is fairly new and it has been blended properly after time you will see the blended edges.If you want to do a quick cover up use your touch up paint but you will have to paint the whole bar sooner or later.If you have the bars painted at a reputable shop look at around 200-250 for each bar this will include removing & replacing as for the bonnet it depends on chips and condition of paint more than likely they will need to blend both front guards as well.If the bonnet requires paint stripping this will add more expense on average look at 600-1000 for a full nose {bar bonnet & blend 2 guards}

Cam paint stripper from a panel beating supplies is the best

Hey i got a white car and im wondering how to make the paint look whiter, like when it has just been painted? It looks dirty even after i finished washing the car. Also how much would a detailer cost to detail the car?

I would suggest a good cut & polish expect around $200 for the cut & polish either a panel shop or detailer would do this.Once this has been done use a good quality polish with a high content of carnuba wax once a month to keep it looking good
