The BEM fitted to South African export vehicles has some unique features, as listed below
Speed Limiter - All automatic transmission vehicles fitted with 3.08 rear axles are speed limited to 200 km/h (sedans) or 180 km/h (wagons)
Sooo... we need to get an S.A. BEM in to our EF/EL's !! |

But youre still not bypassing the fact that its speedlimited because of the tailshaft! And you only want to go to 200 once, no point doing it again. You cuold kiss you license by by, several times over. And you get to see the nice judge, and other things |

| The SA ECU pump out a bit more power too, as SA has less restrictive emmission regulations. |

its the PCM powertrain control module(computer) that is different not the BEM
the BEM is the body electronics module
ive got some south african computers for sale and some ex cop ones aswell (no speed limit at all)
they are to suit EL Falcons only
they are $150 each i have about 10 of each |

Darren I got that out of the ford factory manual. It also said the S.A. version of the BEM had a shorter interior lamp delay of 5 seconds after the key is removed and doors shut. And it did something else which shut down all accessories to save battery power or something.
But my point here is it definately was talking about the BEM with regards to the speed limiting, now if you say they don't limit it then I am confused.
I believe the book, but what you said seems pretty straight foward also! |

| Darren is 100% spot on. The BEM has nothing to do with your speed limiting. |

| i don't get why the cop ecu has no limiter and the stocky one does, both cars have a single-piece tailshaft. |

And I doubt the cop cars got the kevlar coated tail shaft ala EL GT. Maybe they were balanced better. dunno. |

| its to my understanding that some of the tailshafts on fairmonts and ghias had a large harmonic type balancer just out of the end of the box. Maybe with this you couldnt exceed 180kph but because they use the same ECU in both the fairmonts and the lower models then it would be more economical for ford to make one generic ECU that makes them all speed limited. This would also explain why cop cars could exceed this 180kph because they were only falcons and the like. This balance weight even if it was only slightly out of balance would explain the vibrations that some people get at 180k's, and could literally vibrate its way out of the back of the box at speeds far in excess of 180. Its probably like SWL- 2/3 lower than what it can truly handle but a large safety buffer. |

Just curious on those. How easy would it to install one if I wanted to buy one Whats involved in installing it . Would I have Engine management issues at all XR8 Dismantler |

I assume you have a 6 cyl sly?
Remove kick panel, undo bolt from panel, unbolt harness, plug new ECU into harness, bolt back up to panel, replace kick panel.
Maybe have to retrain smartlock? Otherwise plug'n'play. |

Nope! True plug n pray
Smartlock learning is only Keyfob -> BEM <- Ignition Barrel. |

Sorry for coming in late here - but I'm running an EL XR6 ECU that is either not limited or it's somewhere above about 210.
I have only exceeded 200kph once and the car felt smooth and stable - no tailshaft issues apparent to me on that run. I don't know what the transmission might do if operated for prolonged periods at that speed (melt down?). |
