Hi,

i have a EL falcon 97... i got it when it was 97K on the clock... now it's just gone over 100K and i was wondering if i need to replace the timing chain?
(if i do...i better start saving up)

How much is a timing chain? and how much would the labour be to install it?

also.. this is my first car and it's going to be the first service i am going to do. How much would the service be for the El at 100K?

thanks!

No, you don't need to change the timing chain, Not not a rubber belt like some of the jap cars use .

100k service, Oil, Filter, air cleaner . Maybe plugs, depending on how old they are ..

But by the way, If you wanted to replace the timing chain anyway, You'd be up for about $500 .. including labour .

do the leads as well since it he only got it a few thousand ago
i would be doign the whole shebang
plugs/leads,oil,filter
fuel filter
rad flush and coolant
tranny flush at lease service!
new diff oil
new brake fluid
check brakes as well
yes this could be costly but
basically you can start from 100.000kays and knwo what has been changed on your car and it is a easy starting point, if you cant afford it in 1 week do 1 at a time over the next month ie
plugs/leads 1 week
next week do the oil change and fuel filter etc

diff oil should be done about every 100k esp with a lsd!
fuel filter about $15 roughly

Dont bother with the timing chain unless its noisey or you have the engine apart for another reason

oh that's good to hear....
yeah... the car runs fine at the moment... (except that sometimes it can be a little rough when idleing) i guess if i change the spark plugs, that should fix it right?

I would replace the timing chain if:
it is rattling or your car backfires regularly (A dodgy gas conversion will do this).
The timing chain will cost you $16 for a chinese chain with a connecting link joining the ends.
however I prefer the genuine chain as its endless, costs about $100.

I pain more like $30 for one through repco 3 weeks ago. prolly a good reason not to shop at repco but in SW QLD, there isn't much choice
be careful when fitting the new one as if the lines don't line up. it's very easy to strip the threads (as i did icon_redface.gif )
