OK guys and gals

I'm thinking of buying a ZL fairlane or a XGish ute what is everyones opinion on these vehicles and what problems do they have. I want a luxary cruiser, or a ute (WTF dont know why mut hey)

I used to own a ZL fairlane but that was quite a while back and i don't remeber it well, but i did like that car

Also any idea if a newer 4speed auto would fit, and how much work and $$$ required to get the power/fuel consumption similar to an AU or better.

What's the standard ride height and what the basic handleing like.

Sorry about all the questions but I can't find that much information on them on the net. (either there isn't much or I'm a dummass icon_smile.gif )

Just for note on the handleing question, i would not be lowering it, i've got an AU with sports suspension and its too low for me.

They are nice cars. Handling wise. Do you ever go out fishing in a dingy? That's what your looking at in a ZL and the ride height is enough for you to climb up gutters pretty easy. I love the interior in those as well. As for the target au fuel economy why don't you just drop in a whole AU driveline? Shouldn't be too hard?

The XG's aren't too bad. You get the more modern E series engines but in the old X series body, they are 4 speed autos or the good old 5 speed manual, but handling wise they are average. No XG's came with power windows, factory sunroof, cruise, etc. but a heap of stuff from the X series and the XH are direct swaps and can be found cheaply at wreckers.

www.whiteline.com.au have an article on upgrading suspension in a XF ute which is a good read and might give you some ideas.

If you want a V8 you won't find them in a XG unless someone has done the swap themselves.

You could pick up a nice XG XR6 for under 10k which is not a bad place to start or even a bog stock XG for bugger all and then spend the extra to get it looking nice.

Hi guys

thanks for the quick replies I'm learning slowly icon_biggrin.gif

Not really looking at an 8. Isn't worth the extra costs cause I wouldn't really use the power, hell most of the time I just dawdle around about 2k rpm anyway.

Dam being a student and having no money. (but hey u get that)

Yes I know really liked the interior of the ZL and dam it was comfy. Looked at my old car today when I drove past the place where I traded it in, now I rememer why I got so much stuff on the back seat. icon_smile.gif

As for the suspension oh well, I think I prefer soft to hard anyway (OMG I'M BECOMING A GRAMPA) so bring on the boat.

personally i'd take the XG, i've got an XF Ghia, which is essentially fairlane/LTD, and even though i love my XF dearly, i would seriously love to have the better engine of the XG........ and as you've had a ZL before, you'll be only too aware of the problems with XF series EFI systems

Very true. If they haven't been well looked after, underneath the rear quarter windows and on the side of the tray up the top are spots where they can rust up.

No factory 8's in either ZL(XF series) or XG, so he can't.
