Hi Guys,

I'm having trouble with my Ford Fairlane NA 6 1989 Multi Point when it warms up the engine idle starts to drop and rise and at time's almost or cuts out. Now i thought it might have been the idle speed control as it's a common fault but I got another one off a car that was running ok it did make the car idle better and smoother but it started the rise & drop idle again but this time while I drive I can notice the engine loose power quickly and return quickly.

It's had another alternater put in as the other was stuffed, it's had the inlet manifold gasket replaced, it's had the injector's checked 3 replaced, it's had fuel filter and fuel pump gaze filter replaced spark plugs & leads replaced distributor & rotor button replaced. The car is running alot better now with all this done but the idle is still a problem for me I can't drive it anywhere in fear I may cause an accident.

It has a self leveling system which has been disabled by removing the fuse for it as the warning indicator came on for it. Is it getting the vacume from the engine or is it totally on it's own.

Whats Causing this idle after warm up ?

Any Help would be great. icon_cry.gif

You may have a vacuum leak. Try spraying some aerostart etc around the inlet manifold and vacuum lines, if the engine speed increases briefly you have found your vacuum leak.

Another possiblity, my old EA had a real bad idle, it turned out to be the MAP sensor.

well it's impossible to be the inlet manifold as the gasket has already been replaced and I have re checked the bolt's as well I have checked all vacume lines and nothing.

I think it's electrical ?

Is it possible to borrow a MAP sensor from a friend and see if that fixes it for you. It looks like you have covered just about everthing else.

yeah I also have a Falcon with the same engine runs heaps better I swaped it still the same but there was one thing that I did notice on my falcon while the car is running when I pull the vacum line or disconnect the plug from the map sensor the revs pick up but still smooth now if I do this with the fairlane it makes it run rough and stalls ?

i had a similar problem with an EA CFI i use to drive. You would be driving down the road and all of a sudden the car would rev up to 1500rpm for 20 secs then drop back to 600rpm. very dangerous!!!!!!!

i found the fault was the tps t(hrottle position sensor) required adjusting. was measuring 0.63v at closed throttle and 4.5v at wide open throttle. adjusted it to 1v on closed throttle and problem never came back again. a few e-series members have sold their cars due to this problem.

cheers Luke

It could also be a sticky ISC valve on the throttle body, some carby cleaner will fix that.

It's already got another ISC on it already which I mentioned.

The TPS was already checked when the intake manifold gasket was replaced.

It still doesn't explain to me why when I remove either the vacum or plug from the map sensor the engine stalls where when ido this to my Falcon the revs pic up.

Pulling a Vacuum line off should stall any engine, I'd be suss on the falcon if it picking up revs.

But the Falcon is running like new but the Fairlane is running like crap.

What does the ACT sensor do on the inlet manifold it is located on the inside part and the vacum line to the map sensor is located above the ACT sensor does it control to vacum ?

Well I looked in the Gregory's manual and it has a pic of the inlet manifold turned around to show the ACT etc so I guess it is the Air Temp.

Ah yep i found it! In the text on page 52 it refer to it as Air Charge Temperature sensor. I'd guess its the same thing, and yes its electric.
