I think its pretty rude that they do that. I wonder if Holden are as bigger bastards!

Yeah, this green Go5 stuff is supposed to be premium Valvoline stuff. No doubt its better than the supermarket concentrates.

Kmart used to sell demineralised water but none there tonight, so I bought a 15 lt bottle of spring water. I assume thats ok - its clean and free of the treatment chemicals. For $6 or so, I think its a pretty good deal for non-tap water considering it is in there for so long between flushes.

I'd say yes, condensation as I had not been using it so it would be cold for me to drain the radiator.

As long as it is green it should be ethylene gycol based. From memory your coolant was green wasn't it?

Water from the exhaust. More than likely just condensation especially if its been sitting for a while. Did your car use water previously? if not I wouldn't worry.

Interesting how stories get passed around and get changed. I was told ethylene gylcol was eating out the seals in the radiators on ELs and early AU. I was told this by a mate of mine who was working for a radiator place and was flat out replacing/repairing radiators for the local Ford Dealership.
Since I change over to the pink I have had no corrosion problems. I did however have a head fail (porosity holes) whilst using ethylene glycol based products. I guess the guys at Ford Tech should know their own research.

yeh... just because u had a head fail while u were using it doesnt mean it caused it... but thats what the ppl at tech line said...

No I agree, could be caused by anything. I changed to Pink because my mate recommended it. Been using it ever since, I guess 4 years or so, no waterpump seals no other leaks.

Well, the service is done. And I guess next time it will be easy as I know where everything is, the cap has been left off the damn clamp, and I bought the tool from repco to undo the fuel filter from the quick fit connector - $20 for a friggin plastic tool in a bag with a sticker on it. Disgusting. Not much choose really.

The only strange thing is that now at idle it sounds like I can hear water - if you know what I mean - its like theres air somewhere, but I think it was doing it before I drained the radiator so its not since then. Its just a faint gurgling sound. Any ideas?

Now I've done the radiator, I put the heater on and let it run to flow through and checked the level - it seems ok. Is that all I need to do. I remember reading something about there was a trick to make sure there isn't air in it or something???

Leave the cap off until the water in the tank is hot then you know the thermstat is open, run it for a few more minutes to ensure any air pockets are in the tank.

The gurgling sound maybe your air conditioning, next time you hear it turn off the AC and see if it stops.

Thanks mate - that was the tip I remember now.

Could be the air - it makes god awful sounds when I turn the motor off. But as long as it says cool it doesn't really matter!!

Doing your own car servicing is kind of fun - in a nutty sort of way!

If the AC is gurgling it may need re-gasing

It may be my imagination, but is it possible, after only doing the oil, flushing the radiator and changing the fuel filter that the car would be more responsive and quieter?

I thought it was smoother and more responsive, especially from stop, and when I started up at my folks place mum was sure it was quieter.....is it our wishful thinking?

The oil was pretty black - and now it looks pretty clear and clean - could the oil itself (Mobil Synth S) make a such a difference straight away on how it runs?

Maybe you lifters where a little noisy before and putting in clean oil has quietened them down.

The last plug you removed was it the one at the back of the motor (Cyl 6)?
what did the plug look like? Was it rusty looking on the electrode?

The reason I ask this is because thats were the first symptons of a head gasket failure occur.

The number 6 plug on mine is rusted in from that very problem on my car & it will need a new or recon head to fix the problem on my car.

My car has done 220k kms

Hi mate,

Yes, it was the last one at the rear.

I don't know if you could say it was 'rusty', it was discoloured a tan colour, but very little wear as such - and they were all the same....

Might be lucky this time, But watch it...

I replaced all the heater hoses on mine last weekend due to a long standing heater problem which had finally ended up with no hot air when the heater was up full, The problem was the heater tap was stuffed.

I brought a new heater tap from Repco for $30.

I also got the right hoses from Supercheap Auto to finish the job.

I also brought a bottle of Tectaloy Xtra Cool Gold for about $20, 1l treats 15l of water.

Tectaloy was recomended in Max Ellory's repair manual for the EA-ED series.
