| does anybody know approximately how much power is gained from a port and polish job on El Xr6 cylinder heads and adding a decent set of headers? My head gasket is starting to leak and the engine will be coming out for a facelift in about 10 000 k's |

it depends on what gets done and how much money you spend on it.
from just head porting alone with stock cams don't expect a huge gain.
but when you start using bigger cams you'll see more gains than some one with out the head work |

| basically i want to take this engine up to around 200 Kw. the bottom end is going to be blueprinted and possibly forged pistons replacing the old cast set depending on the price. But as for the head i am aiming to spend a bit on it......not sure though what profile cam will be suitable for the power gain i want. any ideas???? |

200 kw at the fly wheel?????
is very doable. the head would be easier to get straigh from JMM or ITS
you don't have to use one of there cams.
invest in an aftermarket computer so your not held back on cams trying to keep the EEC happy. and it will be alot easier.
you shouldn't need forged pistons at that power level. |

| any ideas what aftermarket eec would be worth to suit? we mainly only deal with new genuine engine managment parts at work and not alot of it at that. basically i am planning to spend something like 5k on this engine (give or take a few bucks). that including getting the bottom end done and all the machine work to the head as well. |

Bah, aftermarket ecu isnt needed. Look at it this way, your stock XR6 makes 164kw, and would put down arround 110rwkw in stock form. So if your chasing 200kw engine your only after 146rwkw, wich is a walk in the park. You could get that power with NO head work at all. DEV3HL kits have made 145ish rwkw with no head work. IF you look at getting your head ported and a decent cam insitalled (Wade 1521a/DEV5), your looking arround 160rwkw which would be arround 220-230kw at the engine.
Also forget forged pistons, ACL race hyperutectics are more than up to the task without the drawbacks of forgies. |

| well sounds the way to go but i still have another issue. i have been watching another topic about EL hybrids and seems that mine could be one of these. It is a Feb 98 build and i had a look at the part number on the head which is 96DT6090BA. Does this mean that the cam u suggested is going to fit or not because there has been talk that some cams built for the EL engine wont fit into a Hybrid Engine. I have also had a look at some of the other indicators that they say mean it is a hybrid, like the unpainted engine block for example. |

| FEB98 isnt a hybrid, and 96DA indicated EL head. Your car doesnt have a hybrid EL/AU engine. |

no it's not needed if you don't mind your car stalling at every second set of lights and not being able to control the idle speed when your A/C is on.
but then again the EEC still limits how big your new cam can be |

No.
EL hybrid XR6 head is 96DT...
EL hybrid std head is 96DA...
And apparently Hybrids started production during Jan 98.
Since his head starts with 96DT, it is a hybrid. |

| well thinking that i dont have that much to throw into it i think i will opt for something a little less upmarket. i know that motec stuff is pretty versatile and reliable but spending that amount of money on just one part of the job is out of the question at this stage. what kinda money should i need to spend to get something worthwhile without going ballistic? |

MoTeC is about the best you'll find. I'm days away from installing my M800. I've been playing with it on the bench for a while, and the configuration options available are mindblowing.. But so is the price  |
