hey I'm looking at purchasing a 1636 off someone, but I want to check the base circle and journals with verniers/micrometer to make sure it's correct as someone I know has had trouble with a regrind before.
Gregory's manual says that for the EF head the journals should be 37.94-.96mm diameter with no more than .013mm out of round which is all good... but nowhere can I find what the base circle should be. Any help sooner rather than later greatly appreciated!

That thread covers it.
From there...

Obviously for 94DA, but should be roughly comparable to whatever cam the 1636 is ground on. |

thanks mate
the 1636 is sitting here now, just waiting to get my head back and then maybe next weekend might see the rocker gear interchanged - the cam didn't need checking. Totally unused and still had red grease on it from when it was packed away to be transported! |

Has anyone posted an inquiry on this thread that hasn't received a reply?
Please let me know.....I'll apologise in advance if l've overlooked any posts.
I'd like to suggest that it would probably help if you were to post a new thread if your comments are based on a new inquiry. Alternatively, a PM would be good. When you get a stream of posts, it's hard to keep up. At least it is for people who suffer from oldtimers disease like l do.
Cheers

Just tried posting a new thread and it says I need to be a Mod to do it.
Regarding the 1636, is it ok on std springs? I have an ef series 1. The other thing I'm wondering is with the lift of the 1636 will it be ok on a standard EF head after being decked 20thou or will it put dents in my crowns?
Cheers,
Jais |

Thanks Jais. It never occurred to me that there may be restrictions about posting a new thread. Oh well.
The 1636 will work fine with standard springs. I suspect it will also be OK with a "decked" EF head. I'll check on Monday with my technical guys. Actually...make that Tuesday. I forgot, Monday's a holiday.
Cheers

Chris,
With a cam re-grind what is actually done?
How is like added and profile altered?
Another question what cam profile would be recommended for an el I6 motor running upto about 15psi and a fair bit of head work?
cheers

Thanks Adam
It's an often asked question. How can you remove material from a cam lobe and end up with more lift. In simplistic terms, you grind more off the base circle of the lobe than you do on the nose. i.e. If you reduced the base circle by 0.050" on radius and took almost nothing off the nose, you end up with just under 0.050" more lift than when you started.
As far as your recommendation is concerned, is your vehicle a manual or an auto? Is it just a daily drive?
Cheers

Sorry about that chief.
In short, we did do some development work on the BA cams some time ago. There were a number of technical issues that resulted and, at present, we don't have any plans to renew the development.
I believe other people in our industry have also had problems and are pulling away from doing anything at this time.
Sorry

We are in the process of producing a profile for the AU that is similar, specs wise, to the E series 1636 profile. Stay tuned.
Cheers

I couldn't imagine any cam that we have that could get even close to 200rwkw, much less 300. I don't claim to be an expert on the E series 6 motor but l would have thought that even a massively worked engine with twin turbos could get 250rwkws. I could be wrong.
Anyway, we've got nothing that will achieve the result you're looking for.

car is ef fairmont auto only engine mods are exhaust and extractors, dont plan on changing ecu or diff gears anything like that.
tyou site says 1604 suits autos so is that my best bet? |

My apologies "Skidder", you are quite correct. My thinking revolved around a N/A engine rather than a turbo. Total brain fade.
Anyway....can you tell me how much boost you are running, or planning to run?
