hey mate just wondering wat cam u would recommend for a series 1 AU forte V8 auto, will be doing some head work and putting roller rockers in the same time as the cam, and new exhaust+extractors. looking for a semi rough idle but more low to mid range torque for the street.

cheers in advance

We'd be inclined to suggest the same cam profile for you as we did for the previous post. Profile no. 992A <112.

The specifications are:-

Lift at lobe EX. & IN. 0.295"
Valve lift EX. & IN. 0.472"
Advertised duration EX. & IN. 276 degrees
Duration @ 0.050" EX. & IN. 214 degrees
Phase angle 112 degrees

The idle is probably not as rough as you might like, but, a cam with a semi-rough idle will not perform as well.

Originally, it was intended for both auto and manual. We ground it at 112 phase angle for a manual and 114 for an auto.

We then found that, at 114 for an auto, it was still, in some instances, "hunting" somewhat. That's why we then developed the 1636, to provide a more stable idle.

The specs for the 1004 < 112 are;

Cam lift IN. & EX. 0.240"
Valve lift IN. & EX. 0.480"
Advertised duration IN. & EX. 264 degrees
Duration @ 0.050" IN. & EX. 204 degrees
Lift @ TDC No. 1 IN. 0.046"

I've got an EF I6 with a Powerdyne supercharger. I've got Crow double valve springs fitted and plan to shortly install a 3,000rpm high stall torque converter for the automatic transmision.

-GAS-MAN purchased a similiar vehicle with the same suprcharger and high stall torque converter. It is fitted with a camshaft from you guys, but he doesn't know the model code or anything.

Do you guys have a grind for such a setup or could you make a custom grind for me that would suit?

Currently I'lve still got my old 1636 in there and it is no longer suitable.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I had intended to respond yesterday but was sidetracked at every attempt. I believe our Technical Manager, Keith, has already replied to your email. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask away.

I have an auto EF 6 cylinder with the non comp pacies and a 2.5 inch exhaust. I cant adjust the timing and I dont want to run a high stall convertor. Is there any benefit in fitting one of your cams? Which would you recommend and what gains could be had?

Thanks.

usual answer to those mods would be 1636, best all round cam cant go wrong.

the next step up, 1673 works higher up in the rev range and would be suited to shorter diff gears or high stall

Ok this is what I have to work with Chris,
A 300K EB Series 1 Cpfi Auto on LPG and Stock Exhuast System.
I am looking at freshening up the motor later down the track, but as the saying goes if it aint broke dont touch it.
I am thinking of putting a better cam in to give it a bit more umph but unsure what would you suggest.
Cheers Paul

G'day Paul

The 1636 , as "FordFairmont" has indicated, is the best allround cam, particularly for a basically standard motor with an auto trans.

Thanks for the reply.

Any ideas of dyno figures / experience over a standard cam with the 1636? Is the change noticeable?

Im hesitant to change anything much from factory because I like my fuel economy atm.

There's no best cam as such. It depends on what you're looking for. Is it a daily drive? Bearing in mind that you can't have more "ooomph" right through the rev range.....what is you're preference? Low end torque, more mid range, top end?

Also, what engine mods do you have or are planning to do?

Low end, mid or top end torque means when the torque kicks in when driving.

There are cams which have low end torque, which means that you can feel the car pull harder at lower RPMs. Where as mid range is somewhere in between low and top end where the car starts to pull harder. At top end, torque kicks in later but pulls harder at the higher rev ranges. For everyday driving I'd say low and mid range is fine cause you want it to kick in earlier rather then later.

Though if you want low end, you will lose power top end and also vice versa. Mid range being in the middle you basically even out I believe.

phong =P~
