Hi all,
I just scored a full set of Ef/EL thermo fans, an as new EF/EL radiator (with said fans still on it), an EL Power steering pump, alternator and EL engine mount.... all for 150 bucks...
Now my EL motor is complete and ready for transplant.. just need an ECU, a manual gearbox, and a 3.45+ diff...
can't wait to get all the bits I need.. then in one week I hope to do the whole swap over..

instead of posting a thread "love a bargain" cause you bought some thermo fans |

Actually, that last post was a lead in for my question, I just ran out of time and had to leave for work.
I was going to ask about the wiring.
When I took out the fans, I grabbed their relay block and as much of the wiring as i could as well.
What I wanted to know was if it was possible to wire the high speed fan pickup wire to the davies craig controller I have so I can get it working without chopping up the loom and later connect it to the EL ECU I'm going to add and have it controlled properly.

But really, I should just have to hookup power and earth to the relay block and then feed in a signal from the thermo switch on the davies craig controler to the right wire or wires and the fans should run at full speed.. figured that if someone had already done it, it would save me time tonight.
Besides, once I have all the bits I need, I was planning on telling everyone who the guy i am buying this stuff from cheap is and how to get hold of him.. That way all Perth people can benefit.

yeah, I saw that one already.. but he didn't use the original relay block but rather cut it out and wired fans directly to davies craig thermo relays..
I want to set it up as it is in an EF/EL so I can hook it up to the ECU later when I install it. |

Hey, There are only a couple of us that have the EL ECU in our cars, giving us the option to run the thermos that way.
The prob is that both Troyman and myself have tried, and failed to get them running off the ECU. I am not saying it can't be done, and hopefully I will have another go at it soon.
Be prepared to use the Davies Craig switch if you are not successful.

Hi Ben,
I had to do this because my old radiator and fan died and I replaced it with the EF fans and radiator..
I have worked it out using the davies craig for now..
The two black fan wires together for negative, the two red ones together for positive and ignore the white wire.....
seems to be working well but I would like to get the speed step off the ECU working later on down the track. |

Frank,
Check that both fans are running at full speed when on.
I recall some-one posting that if you don't wire in the white wire one fan only runs at low speed when on.

Thanks Paul,
They both seem to be running at full speed....
I was standing beside the drivers door and could feel warm air running over my feet from under the car...
they seem to be blowing more than the clutch fan ever did.. soon as they kicked in, the temp guage went right down... and they both seem to be blowing roughly the same.. louder than I was expecting too..
still, its another step down the road, and I have done it wihtout cutting any of the original wiring/relay box as well so hopefully I can get it running of the ECU later on. |

they might be loud but they will never be as loud as a Holden V6 thermofan  |

actually the fan with the white wire is not on full speed yet.
if you conect that white wire to the positive you will find that fan will be on full speed.. |

I am intending to do the same, once BBM setup complete, to run my EF thermos off EL ecu, I am currently using the davis cragie switch.
This may help you, its the wiring diagram for the EL thermos

Thanks mr bArNsY,
Do you have the 4 relay schematic for the EF as well?
There is one extra relay on the EF setup because it apparently has an extra fanspeed.
I kept the entire block and a big chunk of the EF wiring around it when I took the fans out.. so should be able to splice it in if I can figure out what goes where...  |

pretty much I have EF thermo's running off one relay with the davis craige switch triggering the thermos to come on.
But I will running a EL ecu later on so i would like the ecu to choose when it wants the fans on, therefore I'll be/would like to run the 3 relay setup via factory loom/relays
here is how the ef thermos are setup if you want to run it off a EF ecu
but if you manage to get it all working perfect running the EL ecu with the EL 3 relay setup let me know or send me a PM

We are in exactly the same situation at present Barnsey.. mine is running off one relay and the davies craig..
I too plan on getting it working via EL ECU.. may have to grab the relay block from an EL to use. |

Incidentally, I read somewhere that the EF/EL's had much more powerful alternators then the Ea-Ed's, is that because of the extra drain of the thermos? I actually noticed the engine drop some revs when the fans kicked in today... so its defiantly put a load on the alternator.
Does anyone have the specs on the output of the EA-ED and EF/EL alternators?

Sweet, the motor going in soon is an EL with an EF alternator.. looks like serendipity strikes again..
Incidentally, today was my first experience putting on a serpentine belt... took me about 5 tries before I figured it out... would have been much easier had I found BenJ's EL motor picture before I did it rather than afterwards... |

The internals cannot be swapped around, the 110amp internals have a greater diameter than the 70 amp and are NOT interchangeable, it's an urban myth propagated by those who've never tried it.
Have a read of the thread I posted above your post for the actual results.
The 110 amp was required for the fans plus coil pack on the EF, for any other application the EL 100amp is plenty as it's only the increased output at low revs [over the 70amp] that counts and the 110 and 100 are about the same.

PS... the 80-85 amp is a Bosch, I think, and cannot be swapped into a Mitsubishi case. |
